WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 1 999999 .110 MODEL.
V No. 739,490.
UNITED STATES iatented September 22, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
ALMOND B. GREEN, OE FULTON, OHIO.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,490, dated September 22, 1903.
Application filed June 19,1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALMOND B. GREEN, acitizen of the United States,r esiding at Lyons, in the county of Fulton and State of Ohio, have'invented certain ne'wand useful Improvements in Wrenches; and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and :to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This inventionrelates to new and useful improvements in sliding-jaw wrenches; and it consists in the provision of a fixed jaw having a handle with a serrated edge and a spring-bar which is carried by the shank portion of the fixed jaw, one end of the'spring bearing against the fixed jaw and the other end being seated in a notch in the .shank portion, While the straps on the sliding jaw.
pass about the spring, which holds a'lug on the movable jaw in engagement with the serrations.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appendedclaims. V
My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 isa side elevation of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the wrench.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates arfixed jaw having ashank portion A, one edge of which is serrated, as at B.- A handle 0 is fitted on said shank portion, and one edge of said shank portion is notched or recessed out, as at D, adjacent to the handle, and E designates a spring-bar, one end of which is seated in said recess and engages within the hole in the handle, which receives the shank portion, thereby securely anchoring one end of said spring, while the other end of the spring'engages the head of the fixed jaw at a. Saidspring normally is in a bowed or arched position, as shown in the drawings, and F designates a sliding jaw, which is chambered out and has a tapering steel lug H fitted Within the same, the angled edge of Serial No. 62,264. (No man which isadapted toengage the teeth or serrations on said shankportion. The straps F'on the movable jaw surround the shank portion of the fixed. jaw and also said spring 7 various uses. 7
While I have shown a particular construction of wrench embodying myinvention, it
will be understood that'I may make alterations in the detailed construction of'the same without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. A sliding-jaw Wrench comprising in combination with the fixed jaw and shank portion with seirations thereon, a spring-bar, one end of which bears against said fixed jaw, its other end seated in a recess in the edge of said shank portion, and a movable jaw having straps surrounding said shank portion, a projection on said movable jaw designed to engage the teeth on said shank portion and held in locked positionby means of said spring,'as set forth.
2. A wrench .having a fixed. jaw with a shank portion havingserrations on o'neof its edges, and having a notch on the edge'opposite the serrations, a spring har having an angled portion'seated insaid notch, a handle fitted over the endof said spring-bar and notch, the other ,endo'f the spring bearing against the fixed jaw, a sliding jaw having straps fastened about the shank portion ofthe fixed jaw, and an angled lug fitted within the movable jaw and adapted to be held by said spring in engagement with the teeth of said shank portion, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiixmy signature in presenceof two witnesses.
