ATTACHMENT FOR WRENOHES.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 3. 190a.
UNITED STATES Patented May 190 PATENT OFFICE.
FRANKLYN M. UREN, OF MGKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO D. H. RUTLEDGE, OF MOKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA; ANNIE UREN ADMINISTRATRIX OF SAID FRANKLYN M. UREN, DECEASED.
I ATTACHMENT FOR WRENCHESP SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 791,117, dated May 30, 1905. Application filed November 8, 1903. Serial No. 179,726.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, FRANKLYN M. UREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mo- Keesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved attachment to be used in connection with sliding-jaw nutwrenches by means of which a nut-wrench can be quickly and easily transformed into a pipe wrench; and with this object in view my invention consists, essentially, in the employment of a U-shaped plate adapted to straddle the shank of a wrench and rest against the inner face of the fixed jaw, the legs of said plate being tapered, said tapered portions being serrated or toothed, whereby a pipe or rod can be firmly gripped between said toothed portions and the movable jaw.
The invention consists also in the novel means of securing the said U-shaped plate upon the shank of the wrench; and the invention consists also in certain details of construction hereinafter fully explained, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of an ordinary nut-wrench provided with my improvement. showing the relative position of the attachment upon the shank of the wrench. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the attachment disconnected from the wrench.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates an ordinary wrench comprising the fixed jaw B, shank O, and movable jaw D. My attachment E is arranged upon the shank O and is adapted to rest against the inner face of the fixed jaw B, as most clearly shown in Fig. 1. This attachment consists of a bifurcated plate shaped, essentially, in the form of a U, so that the said plate can be made to straddle the shank, and the legs extend beyond the shank a distance equal to the length of the fixed jaw. One face E of the bifurcated or U-shaped plate is perfectly flat, and said fiat face is adapted to con- Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation legs are made tapering, as shown at E the inclined face of the leg being opposed to the movable jaw, and the inclined faces are serrated or toothed, as shown at E in order to firmly grip a pipe or other round object when the movable jaw is brought up into engagement with the said object.
For the purpose of fastening the attachment upon the shank of the wrench. I employ a spring F, which is attached at one end to one of the legs, as shown at F, the opposite end F being adapted to engage the side of the shank and hold the attachment thereon.
In order that the attachment may be quickly and easily removed when desired, I prefer to recess the leg upon the inner side, as shown at G, and secure the spring F in said recess, so that when it is desired to remove the attachment the free end of the spring can be pressed back into the recess and the said attachment quickly and easily slipped over the shank. It will also be noted that the spring F is provided with teeth F which correspond with the teeth E produced upon the tapered legs of the plate.
It will thus be seen that I provide an extremely cheap, simple, and eificient attachment for a wrench which can be used in connection with any of the well-known forms of nut-wrenches now in use, and by means of which said nut-wrench can be quickly and easily transformed into a pipe-wrench, and by means of which a firm grip can be securely had upon the pipe or other round object to be turned.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A wrench attachment comprising a bifurcated plate, the parallel members of which are tapered and serrated, and a spring attached to one of the said parallel members, the free end of said spring extending toward the connecting portion of the said bifurcated plate and adapted to engage the shank of the wrench, as set forth.
2. In combination with a Wrench-shank, a in position to engage the under Face of the bifurcated plate adapted to straddle said shank as and for the purpose set forth. shank, said plate having parallel tapering and a serrated members, the inner face of one of FRANKLYN 5 said-members being recessed, and a leaf-spring Witnesses:
having one end secured in the said recess and D. H. RUTLEDGE,
its free end curving upwardly and outwardly CHAS. BOWMAN.
