Description

\ UNETEED SrA rns PATENT Fries.
HENRY KELLY AND JOSEPH KELLY, OF GOSHEN, INDIANA.
PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of. Letters Patent No. 289,270, dated November 2'7, 1883.
Application filed May 28, 1883.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY KELLY and JOSEPH KELLY. citizens of the United States, residing at Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of wooden pumps known as the Cucumber Pump, in which the pump stock has a vertical slot at its upper end; and our improvement consists of a bracket-bearin g for the handle, of novel construction, adapted, in connection with the handle, to practically close the pump-slot, to pre vent foreign matters being thrown into the pump, to prevent the endwise displacement of the pivot-pin, and to prevent the splitting of the pump-stock. The construction by which upper end.
these objects are attained is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents an elevation of a pump embracing our improvements; Fig. 2, avertical section of the same; Fig. 3, a cross-section taken on the line y y of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4, a view in perspective of the bracket-bearing, looking at the rear or open side, toshow the inside wall recesses or grooves closed at their outer ends and open at their inner ends at the back of the bracket, to receive the pivots of the handle.
The usual woodenpump-stock is shown in the drawings with the vertical slot 0 in its Our improved bracket-bearin g A is cast in one piece, open at the back, closed at its upper front side, and open at its lower front side, and within the inside walls of this lower open part are formed cross recesses or grooves a a, closed at their outer ends, a a, and extending to and opening at the back of the bracket, to receive, confine, and cover the handle-pivots b b. which are inserted within said recesses at their open ends, forced inward against the closed ends, and secured in place by removable wooden plugs c c,driven into the open ends of said recesses against the pivots,
and flush with the inner faces of the side (No model.)
passes, and which works within and practically closes the lower open part of the casting, while allowing of the proper movement of the handle in the pump-slot and within the casting. By this construction an ordinary pivotpin may be used, driven into the handle cylindrica-l part, and inserted in the open-ended bearing-recesses in the operation of placing the handle in position through the open end of the bracket, so that the pivot-pin is entirely covered and secured, so that it can neither work out endwise nor work back out of the open ends of the cross-recesses. The casting is complete for attachment to the pump by the screws (1 d passing through the side flanges. The cross-recesses are formed, as described, in side enlargements, and give an important advantage in allowing the handle to be first fitted with the pivot-pin and easily and quickly set in place in the bracketrecesses, and secured therein by the wooden plugs before the bracket is fastened to the pump stock. This construction renders it comparatively inexpensive to cast the single bracket. It avoids the difficulty attending the use of cores in casting round holes for the pin, or of casting the pivot-pin and then casting the bracket-bearing thereon, as has been done. i A screen, is placed in the open bottom of an urn, D, which, while providing for the introduction of water to start the pump, as is often found necessary, also protects the pump against the entrance of leaves, sticks, and stones.
We claim 7 1. The improved pump bracket bearing herein described, having its upper front part closed, its lower front part open, the inside walls of the lower open part having each a cross recess or groove, a a, closed at its outer end and extending to and opening at the back of the bracket, to receive, confine, and cover the handle-pivots in applying the bracket, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the pump-stock having avertical side slot in its upper end, of a single bracket-bearing having its upper front partclo sed and its lower front part open, the inside walls of the latter part having cross having the pivots b I), and formed with the cylindrical part through which said pivotpin is -centrally driven, as shown, and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY KELLY. JOSEPH KELLY.
