Description

1B. S MuESSLER.
"Pump-Handle Bracket.
Patented May .21,"18172-I l @il UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DENNIS S. MESSLER, OF PHILADELEHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNORATO CHARLES G. BLATCHLEY, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMP-HANDLE BRACKETS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent N o. 127,087, dated May 2l, 1872.
be a correct description of the same.
The pivot-pin of pump-handles has been supported in a metal. U-shaped bracket extending up on each side of the slot that is made in the upper end of the pump for the` handle. It is important that this U-shaped bracket should be made in one piece, because it prevents the pump-barrel splitting down in line of the slot by the strain in operating the handle; hence the pivot-pin has either been a bolt with a nut, that is liable to work loose, or else the pin has been retained by a yoke that requires to be separately screwed to the pump adjacent to the pivot and bracket. My invention is made for confining the pivot-pin in the metal bracket; and consists in two movable .guard-blocks applied at the ends of the pivots and outside the metal U-shaped bracket, said guard-blocks passingbeneath the back ofthe bracket and having spikes to enter the wood, so that they are iirmly held in place by the bracket when secured to its place, thereby dispensing with any additional screws, and also allowing the pivot-pin to be easily driven out of the handle and bracket when the latter has been loosened and the guardblocks removed.
In the drawing, Figure l is an elevation of the U-shaped bracket and the guard-blocks for the pivot-pin; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section at the line The bracket is made of the side pieces a a andlower connection b, cast all in one piece, for the purposes aforesaid, and the same is provided with screw-holes for the screws c c, as usual. The holes for the pivotpin d are also provided the same as they have been when a bolt and nut are employed for the piv ot; but in my improvement the pin d does not extend beyond the faces of the bracket. Against the faces of the bracket at the ends of the pin d the guard-blocks t' i are placed,
and each block has a spike, o, that is driven into the wood of the pump r and holds the block from lateral motion, and a flange, s, upon each block, entering arecess in the bracket behind the pivot at each back edge serves to hold the block in place and prevent the spike drawing out of the wood. By this means the bracket serves to hold the guard-blocks, and these in turn cover the ends of the pivot-pin and prevent that working out.
I claim as my invention- The guard-block t', applied to and combined with the movable U -shaped pump-bracket, and and constructed with a flange entering between the wooden body of the pump and the metal bracket, as set forth, so as to hold said guardblock by fastening the bracket to the pump, as specified.
Signed by me this 11th day of December,
DENNIS S. MESSLER.
