VUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
rHoMAs K. KNAPP, or TIFFIN, oHIo` -f BREADAND MEAT sLloER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,451, dated November 13, 1883. Application med July 11,1883. (Model.)
'have invented certain new and useful -Improvements in` Adjustable Bread and Meat Slicers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved device for slicing bread, meat, and other articles, and has for its objects to provide for adjusting the various parts to compensate for the wear occasioned by frequent ruse, as more fully herein afterspecified.V `These objects lattain by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichi Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved device;` Fig. 2, a detached view of the device for holding the article to the cutter. Fig. 3 represents 'a perspective view, showing the opposite sideof the device to that shown in Fig. l; and Fig. 4 represents a view, partly in end elevation and partly in section,`of my improved device. l i
The letterA indicates the base of the device, which has avertical board, B, at one end, anda vertical standard, C.
The r letter D -indicates two metallic bars having longitudinal slots, whereby they may be adj ustably secured to the bottom of the base bymeans-of screws E. The bars are provided with flangesRand havefsecured to them a guideway, G, of wood or other material. One edge of thebase is rabbeted, forming aguidef Way, H, opposite to and parallel with the guideway above mentioned, between which slides the rabbeted bottom ofthe knife-frame I. The vertical' standard O is adj ustably secured to a vertical metallic standard, K, by means of screws L, passing through slots M, and the metallic standard adjustably secured to the base by means of screws N, passing through similar slots, P. The board B is adjustablysecured to a similar metallic standard, Q, by similar means. The standards, at
their upper ends, are provided with lateral eX- tensions R, having downward anges, in which the rabbeted upper edge ofthe knife-frame slides. The knife is secured to the face ofthe frame obliquely, so as to give a draw cut to the `article when the frame is reciprocated.
The letter S indicates a hinged section having an oblique edge; which sets opposite the oblique edge of the knife-blade. The hinge is adj ustably secured to the inside of the knifeframe by means of a screw, T, passing through a slot in one of its leaves. The said hinged section is adjusted to and from the edge of the knife by means of a rack, U, and bolt W, so as to regulate the thickness of the slices cut off the article by the knife.
Yindicates a handle, by means of which the the knife-frame may be manipulated, and Z a hook by which the base may be secured toa table or other support.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
l. The combination, in a device for slicing bread, meat, and other articles, of theadjusta` ble standards carrying boards and secured to the base of the devicefthe adjustable bars secured to the bottom of the said base, 'and carrying a guideway at their ends on one side, the flanged extensions at the upper ends of the vertical metallic standards, and the sliding cutter-frame and cutter, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the cutter-frame, of the gage-section, hinged thereto by means of an adjustable hinge, and provided with a bolt adapted to engage a suitable rack on the cutter-frame, whereby the gear-section may be adj usted to regulate the thickness of the slices, substantially as set forth. j
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
