I. MAGKEY. MEAT AND VEGETABLE SLIGBR. No. 459,125; Patented Sept. 8,1891.
' F .Z w
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC MACKEY, OF IIOLLANSBURG, OHIO.
MEAT AND VEGETABLE SLICER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,125, dated September 8, 1891.
Application filed August 10, 1889. Serial No. 320,383. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC MAOKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at I-Iollansburg, in the county of Darke and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Meat and Vegetable Slicers; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to that class of machines in which meat or other articles are sliced by means of a reciprocating knife.
The object of my invention is to improve upon the general construction of this class of devices; and to that end the invention consists of constructions and combinations, all as will hereinafter be described in the specification, and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my machine; Fig. 2, a transverse section on line so of Fig. 1, and Figs. 3 and 4: details showing the adjustable knives.
A represents the base, having the groove a; A, the meat-table, which overlaps the groove (1, and A the back of the meat-table and supporting bracket 0/, which forms with groove to a guide for the knife-frame A. This frame is provided with an adjustingboard A pivoted at the rear end by means of the pins a (shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1,) which permit the board A to move laterally when operated upon by the adj usting-screw a mounted on the pedestal afisecured to the knife-frame to move the edge of the board to and from the knife A to regulate the thickness of the slices to be cut. The knife A is set in countersinks a in the top and bottom bars a and a and provided with slots a for moving the knife forward asit becomes worn. The knife is held in place by set-screws a", which, when loosened, permit of the knife being moved forward. The handle a of the knife is secured to the rear end of the knifeframe, as shown in the drawings, and obviates the objections to that class of devices which have the knife-handle at one side of the knife-frame.
Ileretofore in all the devices that I am aware of it has been the custom to have the edge of the back of the table extend into the path of the knife and form a cutting-edge, which becomes worn in a very short time. The edge of the back of the table has also been provided with a metal face with the edge beveled so that the knife will strike against it. This device does not hold the meat by the edge of the knife. To remedy these defects, I shorten this back and provide projections (L12 and (1 to which are secured, at one side of the path of the reciprocating knife, a knife B, arranged in a vertical plane and having slots 7), and held in advance of the back by set-screws Z), which permit of its being adjusted forward as it becomes worn by use. As this knife will impress itself in the meat, and when the reciprocating knife approaches it, it assists in shearing the meat. As a matter of fact the two knives act conjointly to cutthe meat, and the edge of the meat next to the knife B will be cut away as clean as any part of the slice.
Vhat I claim as new is 1. The combination of an adjustable reciprocating knife, the back of the table having the projecting ends a and a, and a stationary adjustable knife secured to the said projecting ends and arranged in a vertical plane, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the base, a reciprocating knife mounted upon the base, a meatboard arranged a slight distance from the path of the reciprocating knife and provided with projections e and a, and the stationary adjustable knife secured to the projections a and (L and arranged in a vertical plane parallel with the plane of the reciprocating knife, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC MACKEY.
