- POTAT O-GUTTER.
Application filed May 13,1919. Serial No. 296,788.
To all whom may concern:
Frankford, Philadel hia, in the county of Philadelphia and tate of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful improvements in Potato-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for cutting vegetables such as potatoes and the like and the principal object of the invention is to provide means for forcing the vegetables against a plurality of knives for cutting the same into small pieces Another object of the invention is to provide means for adjusting the knives to regulate the size of the pieces in which the po-' tato is cut and also toprovide several sets of knives'whereby the potato may be cut into slices or into small ieces.
Still another object o the invention is to provide means whereby large vegetables will have portions cu't therefrom so that the remaining part will fit the apparatus. Theinvention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompany ng drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the sev eral views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view; Fig. 3 is a front view of one of the knife frames; I
Fig. 4 is a like view with one frame placed in front of the other;
Fig. 5 is a top view of one of the frames with the slide omitted;
Fig. 6 is a view of a modification.
In these views 1 indicates a casing which is of substantially rectangular form with ts top open and; a hopper 2 is placed on sa1 d top or is formed thereon by extending the sides of the case upwardly. The rear end of the case is also open and guides 3 are formed on the side walls at this opening. These guides are adapted to receive 'the knife frames 4 and? 5. Within the caseis located a plun- Specificatton of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 28, 1919.
I ger 6, the rod 7 of which passes through the Be itknown thatI, JAMES E. Tom), a citizen of the United States, residing at front wall of the case. This rod is provided with a guide 8 which receives the lower end of an operating lever 9 which is pivoted to the braces 10 projecting outwardly from the front of the case .The "guide 8 is formed of a cross piece 11 carried by the bolts 12 projecting from the outer end of the rod 7 and the rollers 13 which are journaled on said bolts between the rod 7 and the cross piece 8. These rollers engage the lever 9 and thus reduce the friction between the parts-when the device is operated.
At the bottom of the hopper at the rear thereof is located a knife 14 and above the knife is located a plate 1,5 which is pivoted intermediate its ends, as at-16, to the hopper. A spring 17 holds the lower end of the plate in a position directly over theedge of the knife. A stop 18 limits the movement of this plate by the spring. As will be seen, the knife 14 is located above the path of movement of the upper edge of the plunger so that if a potato would be so large as to have a portion projecting above the upper edge of the plun er, this knife 14 would cut the sa-me and t e plate 15 would give to permit the cut portion to pass over the top of the knife. When the parts are withdrawn the spring would cause the plate to return the upper portion of the potato to the hopper.
Each of the knife frames is of substantially rectangular form with one side provided with the slots 19- and the opposite side with notches 19 to receive the lmives 20. After the knives are placed in position with their ends engaging these slots the slide 21 is placed in position over the open end of the frame to hold the knives against dis- The case is provided with an arm 22 at its lower end carryinga thumb nut 23 bywhich the device may be attached to a table or other support.
gaging 1. A device of the class described comprising a case, a reciprocating plunger therein, means for reclprocating the plunger, cutting means carried by the case, a hopper connected with the case above the plunger,
a knife at the rear end-of the hopper above the path of the plunger, a pivoted plate within the hopper having its lower end adjacent the cutting edge of the-plate and s ring means for holding the plate in vertleal osition.
2. knife holding frame for potato cutters comprising a rectangular frame having notches formed in one of its inner Walls '20 and slots passing through the opposing Wall, said slots and notches being spaced apart, said slotted Wall having grooves therein, knives having their ends engaging said slots and notches and a slide engaging 25 said rooves for removably holding the knives in place.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
