This invention relates to a slicing device and has for the primary object the provision of means whereby cheese or like food products which are made in block formation may be readily severed into slices and which will sever a plurality of slices during each cutting operation and also whereby the food product may be cut into slices of different thicknesses.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means whereby small pieces or ends of the food product may be severed into slices and thereby eliminate waste.
With these and other objects in View this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of our invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a top plan view, partly in section, illustrating a slicing device constructed in accordance with our invention.

Figure 3 is a transverse sectional View illustrating the cutting element supported in an elevated position.

Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral I indicates a supporting frame which includes pairs of upstanding plates 2 and 3. The pair of 5 plates 2 are spaced from the pair of plates 3 and are arranged adjacent the rear end of the supporting frame I, while the pair of plates 3 are arranged adjacent the front end oi the supporting frame. Arranged between the supporting 10 plates 2 and 3 and carried by the side portions of the supporting frame is a rest or board 4 on which is adapted to be positioned the food product when it is desired to slice the latter. The rest or board 4 is arranged transversely of the supl5 porting frame I and the pair of plates 3 have formed integrally therewith oppositely extending abutment flanges 5 which are suitably secured to one edge of the board or rest 4. An abutment plate B is slidably mounted to the pair of plates 2O 3 and aligns with the abutment flanges 5 when in its uppermost position to cooperate therewith in forming an abutment which extends substantially the full length of the rest or board 4. The abutment plate 6 is normally urged upwardly by 25 a spring 'I and which will permit the abutment plate to move downwardly when engaged by a cutting mechanism which will be hereinafter more fully described. The upper edge of the abutment plate 6 carries rollers 8 to be engaged 30 by the cutting mechanism when the latter is swung downwardly for the purpose of slicing the food product upon the board or rest. The board or rest has arranged transversely thereof groups of grooves 9, the grooves of one group being arranged in closer relation than the grooves of the other group. Slots IIJ are formed in the board or rest 4 and extend longitudinally thereof and intersect the grooves 9. One of the grooves 9 receives the lower edge of an abutment II and the latter carries depending legs I2 which extend through the slots I0 and are secured to a bracket I3 carried by the rest or board 4. Guide rods I4 are carried by the supporting frame I to accommodate small pieces of food product to be sliced by the device. It is to be understood that the abutment I 9 may be applied to either one of the side plates I8 of the abutment adjusting member I5 and in this way the small pieces of food product can be placed over either group oi grooves 9 so that said pieces can be severed by the cutting mechanism into slices of diierent thicknesses. The movable abutment I9 is similarly constructed to the stationary abutment II and includes depending legs removably received by the side portions I3V of the abutment operating member I5. The stationary abutment II divides the groups of grooves, as shown in Figure 4.
The pair of plates 2 of the supporting frame I are connected by a journal bar 2.0 for pivotally supporting the cutting mechanism and the latter consists of a pair of substantially U-shaped elements 2i connected by a bar 22 and a handle 23, the latter being located at the free end of the cutting mechanism. The pivoted ends of the frames 2I are provided with slots 24 which slidably receive a bar 25 and the latter has threaded thereto screw threaded adjusting bolts 26 which are journaled to the frame I and equipped with nger pieces whereby the bar may be adjusted in the slots. A similar bar 2l is fixed to the other ends of the frames 2| or adjacent to the handle 23. The bars carry pins 28 and a cutting wire 29, laced over the pins of the bars so as to form between said bars a plurality of cutting strands for severing the food product on the rest 4 into slices and which may enter the grooves of the rest so that the food product when sliced will be cut entirely through its block formation. By adjusting the bar 25 towards and from the bar 21 the tension of the cutting strands may be increased and decreased.
One of the frames 2| is provided with a socket to receive a spring pressed catch' or latch 30 for supporting the cutting mechanism in an elevated position, as shown in Figure 3, and after the placing of the food product on the rest or board 4 the latch is released from the respective frame 2I so that the cutting device or cutting strands thereof may be swung into engagement with the block of food product and by a further pivotal movement of the cutting mechanism in said direction the product will be severed into slices, the abutment plate 6 moving downwardly under the inuence of the cutting mechanism therewith.

1. A slicing device comprising a support, a cutting mechanism hinged to said support adjacent one end of the latter and adapted to be swung towards and from the opposite end of the support, a rest arranged transversely of the support and Within the path of movement of the cutting mechanism and having groups of spaced grooves, a iixed abutment carried by said rest and arranged between the groups of grooves and parallelling said grooves, a movable abutment adjustably mounted on the rest and movable towards 5 and from the xed abutment and paralleling the grooves, and a movable abutment slidably mounted on the support and arranged at right-angles to the irst-named abutment and said grooves and moved by said cutting mechanism. i
2. A slicing device comprising a support, a cutting mechanism hinged to said support adjacent one end of the latter and adapted to be swung towards and from the opposite end of the support, a rest arranged transversely of the support l and within the path of movement of the cutting mechanism and having groups of spaced grooves,
a fixed abutment carried by said rest and arranged between the groups of grooves and paralleling said grooves, a movable abutment adjustably mounted on the rest and movable towards and from the xed abutment and paralleling the grooves, a slidable abutment carried by the support and located at one edge of the rest and at right angles to the iirst-named abutment and movable under the influence of the cutting mechanism, and spring means connected to the slidable abutment.
3. A slicing device comprising a support, a cutting mechanism hinged to said support adjacent one end of the l-atter and adapted to be swung towards and from the opposite end of the support, a rest arranged transversely of the support and within the path of movement of the cutting mechanism and having groups of spaced grooves, a xed abutment carried by said rest and arranged between the groups of grooves and paralleling said grooves, amovable abutmentadjustably mounted on the rest and movable towards and from the xed abutment and paralleling the grooves, a slidable abutment carried by the support and located at one edge of the rest and at right angles to the rst-named abutment and movable under-the influence of the cutting mechanism, spring means connected to the slidable abutment, and flanges integral with the support and extending from opposite ends of the slidable abutment and paralleling one edge of the rest.
4. A slicing machine comprising a support, a rest carried by said support and arranged trans- 5U versely thereof, connected arched frames hinged to one end of the support and movable towards and from the other end of said support to overlie a product positioned on the rest, bars carried by said arched frames and one of said bars being adjustable relative to the other, pins carried by said bars, a cutting strand laced from a pin in one bar to a pin in another, and grooved plates carried by said bars to receive the strands to cooperate with the pins in maintaining. the strands G0 in spaced relation.
