UNITED STATES THOMAS M. KNAPP,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF TIFFIN, onro.
VEGETABLE AND MEAT SLICER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,411, dated December 1, 1885.
Application filed October 2, 1884.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. KNAPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tiffin, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vegetable and Meat Slicers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in slicers for meat, vegetables, and other articles, and is designed, objectively, to produce a device that shall be cheap and simple in construction, conveniently manipulated, and quickly adjusted as to the thickness of the slices to be cut.
The device consists, essentially, in a box for containing the material to be sliced and a sliding knife-carrier, the same to be operated by hand.
In describing the device reference is had to the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective of the slicer; Fig. 2, a plan view, partly in section; Fig. 3, a detail view to show the construction of the legs, and Fig. 4 a perspective of the side opposite that shown in Fi A platform,A,supports two sides, B, one having a grooved slot, 0, laterally-across it on the inner face to retain a sliding piece, D, to which is hinged a door, E, having a grooved or corrugated bearing-surface. The side pieces are strengthened and secured to the platform by castings F, the parts being preferably secured by screws. Asliding knife-holder, G, is provided with a top extension, H, grooved longitudinally. Within this slot rest tongues I, on the end of flanged plates K, secured to the top of the sides B by screws, and made adjustable thereon by the holes for the passage of the said screws being larger than their shanks. This adjustment allows for all wear of parts, and, while as effective, is more cheaply accomplished than by slotting the plates. The extension H slides in recesses in the top of the ends of the pieces B, so that the movement of the knife holder will be smooth and the ends of the pieces B be flush with its surface. The plate K on the grooved or slotted side is extended somewhat over the said side in the direction of the other side piece, so that the holder G may have a greater travel without disengaging with the tongue than though it were projected on a Serial No. 144,575. (No model.)
line with the said side. The holder G has on its under side a strip, L, having a groove, M, on its bottom, and projecting on one side is there provided with a tongue, N. Thelsides B project beyond the platform A and rest on the strip L, and the edge of the said platform is grooved for the reception of the tongue. Adjustable flanged plates 0 are secured to the under side of the platform and project beyond, carrying a tongued strip, I, which engages with the bottom of the strip L, the tongue entering the groove M. By means of screws the legs R are secured to the platform, the said screws passing through the legs centrally and through enlarged holes in the plates 0, so as to allow for their adjustment. The sore -holes through the legs are countersunk, so as to receive the screw-head, leaving the edges of the bottom of the legs sharp, so as to prevent the device slipping when in use, the said legs biting into whatever they are rested on when pressure is applied. The knife S is slanted, so as to give a shear out. A portion, T, of the holder G is secured to posts U, slotted longitudinall y and given an adjustment laterally by means of two long eyebolts, U, or other similar devices, passing through the slots, and also the strips H and L, acting as clamps. This adjustable part, being in front of the knife, regulates the depth of cut. The adjustable door allows various thicknesses of material to be held firmly against the knife as the holder is operated, a handle, V, being provided for convenience on the said holder. The holder G is slotted at X, thus leaving the strip H unsupported for a distance. By means of the bolts U the strip H may be brought firmly down on the portion T, since the slot gives the said strip a play it would not otherwise have. Were the said strip H supported to the edge of the knife, the inner bolt, U, could not bring the strip down on the portionT with sufficient force to firmly hold it, the supported portion in that case preventing the necessary downward movement to allow it to clamp. This would be more apparent, in case the slot was not used, were the strip H to be supported slightly above the piece T, for then the inner bolt, U, could not bring the strip and piece T in contact at all. The slotted posts allow the igamping of the gage laterally to or from the nife.
Having .described the device, what I claim 1S- 1. In a slicer, a retaining bOX having one sideIslotted or grooved, in combination with a hinged or swinging door secured to a strip having longitudinal movement in said groove to or from the knife, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. Ihe combination of a knife-holder with an adjustable gage in front of the knife, having slotted posts, and screw bolts passing through both posts and holder, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. A knife-holder for slicers, having longitudinal strips on the top and bottom, and slotted for a distance under the top strip and to the rear of the knife, in combination with a gage placed in front of the knife and provided with slotted posts, and screw bolts'passing through the posts and strips, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. The combination of a reciprocating knifeholder, an adjustable gage therein provided with slotted posts, screw-bolts passing through said posts and into the holder, a retaining-box, a door therefor swung on a strip having longitudinal play in said box, and legs with countersunk screw-holes sharpened at the edges, the whole combined to form a slicer, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
I11 testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS M. KNAPP.
