Description

(Mode1.)
J. A; KLINE. LOOK HINGE.
Patented Nov. 13, 1883 A Home UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. KLINE, ornornnj s roan, rn'nnsrnvnmanssieivon or one} nannro LEWISBUOKWALTER, OF SAME PLACE.
LOCK-HINGE.
SFECIFICATIOH' forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,345, dated November 13, 1883. i
To all whom itmay concern Be it known that I, JOHN A. KLINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boyers Ford,in the county of Montgomery and State of l Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Shutter-Hinge, of which the. following is a specification, reference being had to the ac- Q companying drawings.
This invention relates to hinges for window blinds, shutters, and the like, and it has for its. object to produce a lock-hinge which shall be absolutely wind-proof, or incapable of being closed by the force of the wind against the blind or shutter which inay be hinged thereby, but which may be readily closed, when it shall be desired to do so, by means-of a simple contrivance attachcdito or forming part of the I device. l.
My invention therefore consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is I a perspective view, showing my improved hinge open. Fig. 21s arear view of the same. Fig. 3 is aperspective view, showing the hinge in position for being closed. Fig. dis a side view, showing the hinge closed; and Fig. 5 is t a detail view, showing in perspective the several parts composing my improved hinge deand in rear of the .pintle, is beveled, soas to form a double inclined track, E E.
F is a lug or stop projecting laterally from the upper end of the cylinder 0.
i G is a lug or stop projecting forwardlyfrom the upper end of the cylinder.
His a beveled or inclined lug formed upon the rear side of the leaf A, adjoining the upper end of the cylinder 0, as shown.
I is a ring adjusted upon the upper bevopened farther.
leaf B and the shutter attached thereto will 7 5 Application filed August 1, 1883. (Modem eled end of the cylinder 0, and having its under side beveled to correspond. The. ring I is provided with an operating arm or handle, J, having a downwardly-projecting stoplug, K.
The leaf B of the hinge is provided with the eye L, by which it is hingeduponthe pintle D above the ring I, the upper edge of which is flush with the upper edge of the'cylinder O proper. Projecting laterally from the eye L is a lug, M, which is beveled uponthe under side.
In operation, when the shutter or blind, which is attached to the leaf B, is opened the leaf B will open smoothly until the lug M reaches the lug H of leaf A. The leaf B (carrying the shutter) will then be forced slightly in an upward direction until the lug M drops down in front of the leaf A, where it forms a stop that prevents the leaf B from closing; At the same time the body of the leaf B reaches and abuts against the stop-lug F, preventing the said leaf B from being It will thus be seen that the be held or retained with absolute security in an open position. In order to close the shutter it is'only necessary to turn the ring I, by means of the handle J, to the position shown in Fig. 3 of. the drawings. By thus turning the said ring it will travel up the inclined or beveled tracks EE, thus lifting or raising the leaf Buntil the lug M may pass over the upi I per edge of the lug H, thus permitting the leaf B to be easily closed. The arm or handle .8 5
J of the ring I will be folded between the leaves A and B. j I
I am aware that lock-hinges have been con structed previous to my invention comprising a beveled track for the upper leaf and suitablestop-lugs; also, that lock-hinges have been equipped with beveled rings interposed between the leaves for unlocking. Such construction I do not, therefore, broadly claim.
I claim as myinvention and desire to secure 9 5 by Letters Patent of the United Statesi The combination, in a lock-hinge, of the leaf A, having the cylinder 0 beveled on top, so as to form the double track E E, the ring I, having its under side beveled to correspond with the track E E, and provided with the my own Ihave hereto affixed my signature in arm 01: handle J, the stop-111g G, projecting presence of two Witnesses. forwardly from the cylinder 0, and the leaf I B, having the]atera-11y-projeeting locking-111g 7 .JOHN A. KLINE. 5 M, substantially as and for the purpose set Witnesses: forth. V MARY E. SIEGFRIED,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as ABRAHAM SEIVARD.
