DEVlCk FOR FASTENING PAPER BAGS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 285,758, dated October 16, 1883.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT W. ANGIER, o the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improved Device for Fastening Paper Bags; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to devices for securing the mouths of bags when closed; and it con sists in the provision of a flexible metal plate secured to the inner part of one of the sides in such position as to lie within the mouth of the bag, the said plate being so formed as to permit the upper corners of the bag to be folded laterally against it, and then to be folded over upon itself and upon the laterally-folded corners, thereby securely closing the mduthof the bag. I

Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a view of a bag with my device secured thereon. Fig. 2 is a view of the up per portion of the bag with the corners d turned down. Fig. 3 is'a similar view, showing the bag entirely closed.

A is the body of a bag, shown in the present case with straight sides and an open mouth, which extends across the whole width of the bag. Within the mouth of the bag a piece of thin flexible metal, B, is secured, by pasting or otherwise, to one side of the bag. This piece of metal is triangular in shape, coming not quite to a point at the mouth of the bag for a short distance, after which the sides may continue down a short distance farther in parallel lines, as shown at c c. This plate may have a covering of paper upon the inside, so that it is entirely separated from the contents of the bag. Whenthe bag is to be closed, the corners d d are turned down along the inclined edges 1) b, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper narrow edge and top of the bag are then folded down over the turned-in corners d d, which and widening out as it extends downward at b b are thus held in place, and the rigidity of 45 the plate is sufficient to hold the edge down after it has been folded, thus making a rapid and convenient method of secu ring the in ouths of bags,

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 'Patent, is-

The bag A, having the metal plate B, with inclined edges bl; fixed to the center of one side, so that the corners d may be folded in ward and the narrow edge of the plate be turned downward to close the mouth and confine the corners, substantially as herein described.
