Description

H. T. RANDOLPH.
COVER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 14. 1919.
Patented Feb. 10,1920.
@i j M m p UNITED s ArEs PATENT oFF cE.
HABRY THOMAS RANDOLPH, OF KANSAS CITY, KANSAS.
covnn.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY THOMAS RAN- DOLPH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Wyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers, of which the followlng is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in covers and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with laundry baskets and kindred receptacles, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved cover of this general character which may be readily and conveniently applied to the basket or receptacle. and effectively maintained thereon.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character formed of flexible or p11- able material whereby the same may be readily folded or compacted to occupy a minimum of space when not in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character provided with particularly arranged fastening means whereby the cover may be effectively engaged with a basket to snugly engage the contents thereof when the occasions of practice may require in order to hold said contents against dis placement. l p The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and ar-' position, the coacting basket being indicated by dotted lines and the openingin an end portion of the flap or skirt being also indicated by dotted lines, and
Specification tr Letters mum. P t t F 10, 1920, Application filed June 14, 1919. Serial No. 304,213.
comprises a flexible or pliable sheet 1 of textile material, preferably'duck, and which has its marginal portionsdefined'by a contlnuous SkII'tOI fia 2 adapted to overlie when in applied position.
'the sides of the bas ret or other receptacle The skirt or flap 2 at each end of the sheet 1 is provided with a series of vertically disposed slots 3 The slots 3 extend in a direction transversely of the sheet 1 and; are adapted to have disposed therethrough a handle as generally provided at each'end of a laundry basket or kindred receptacle.
Secured to the inner face of each end portion of the skirt or flap 2 and at a point above the uppermost sl'0t3 is an end portion of a flexible member or strap 4 which is adapted to be disposed throu h the adjacent handle and extended upwardly and adjustably engaged with a buckle 5 secured to the 4 outer face o-f'the sheet 1 in close proximity to the adjacent end thereof. By this means, effective anchoring of the end portions of the cover to the basket or other receptacle is obtained. I
By having a series f, vertically disposed slots 3, provision is h i a de for the requisite coaction with a handle in accordance with the size of the load within the basket as in packing laundry in a receptacle of this type, the load or contentsgenerally extend above theupper or open face thereof,
Each side portion of the skirt or flap 2 adjacent its upper and lower margins is provided with coacting buckles 6 and coact mg straps 7. Each coacting buckle and strap is in longitudinal alinement and operates whereby the skirt or flap 2 may be contracted to effect a snug and effective engagement of said skirt or flap 2 with theside walls of the basket or receptacle.-
Secured to the outer face of the sheet 1,
' at the central portion thereof, is a pair of transversely alined buckles 8 positioned adjacent the side marginal portions of said.
sheet, and secured to the outer face of the sheet 1 and in substantially longitudinal alinement with each of the buckles 8 is an end portion of a strap 9'. The strap 9 is adjustably engagedwith its alined buckle 8 whereby means are provided for contracting the cover longitudinally as the occasions of practice may requireand in order to assure a snug fitting of the. cover over the basket or other receptacle and the load or contents therein.
From the foregoing description, 1t is thought to be obvious that a cover c0nstructed in accordance with my inventlon is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with whlch itmay be assembled and operated, and t will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the p' ecise arrangement and formation of the veral parts erein shown 1n carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
v I claim:
1. A cover of the class described compris- I ing a sheet of flexiblematerial, a skirt secured to the marginal portions of said sheet, longitudinally disposed stra s arranged at the side marginal portions 0 the sheet, each of the stra s being anchored at one end portion to t e sheet, and a holding member for the free end ortion of each of the. straps and secured to t e sheet at a point substant1ally in lon itudinal alinement withthe connected en portion of the strap.
tially in longitudinal alinement with the connected end portion of the strap, a air of transversely separated straps secure to the longitudinal portions of the skirt, said straps extending longitudinally of the cover, and holding members secured to each of the longitudinal portions of the skirt for coaction with said last named straps.
. In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
HARRY THOMAS RANDOLPH.
