To all whom it mayconcern:

Beit known that I, OLOF J ANSSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Sweden, in the count-y of Folk and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Inkstands; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a longitudinal section of a pocket-inkstand constructed in accordance with my invention and on an enlarged scale; Fig. 2, a detail view of the circular plate for holding the ink-receptacle in the case; Fig. 3, a similar view of the hinged plate for closing the mouth of the ink-receptacle; Fig. 4., a detail view of the slotted plate to which the hinged plate shown in Fig. 3 is connected, and Fig. 5 a similar view of the springcatch.

The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in that class of pocket-inkstands in which the glass ink-receptacle is of hemispherical form held within a case provided with a screw-threaded cover, the mouth of the receptacle being closed bya packing connected to a removable plateheld in position by a spring-catch.

The invention consists, in connection with the above construction, of providing a slotted plate or disk for holding the ink-receptacle'in position within the case, substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed. These several objects I attain by the construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed. l

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the case for containing the ink-receptacle, which may be of wood, rubber, or other suitable material, and of circular form. The case A has an externally-screw-threaded flange, a, and annular shoulder I) to receive the internally-screw-threaded cover B, and when in place, as shown in Fig. 1, the inkstand is peri iectly smooth upon its top, sides, and bottom,

and, in addition, it is very low and wide, thus making it compact and easily carried in the pocket, and its wide base renders it less liable to tip over when on the writersdesk or table. The case A is formed with a hemispherical seat, 0, for the ink-receptacle C, said receptacle being of glass and of hemispherical form, as shown, and has a suitable neck, (I. This peculiar form of ink-receptacle renders it less liable to burst from the freezing of the ink, as when the receptacle is filled wit-h ink only to that extent or so far as to leave a small space between the ink and neck of the receptacle and in such condition standing on the table or desk, the bottom and sides thereof being slanting or on an incline, the frozen ink,when expanding,has no flat surface to press against, and consequently will move gently in an upward direction to fill the unoccupied space. Thus comparatively little lateral pressure is brought against the glass. The mouth of the neck (I is closed by a packing, g, of rubber, cork, or other like material used for the purpose, said packing being suitably connected to a plate, E, having downwardly-curved extensions h i. ThisplateE is hinged to a slotted plate, 7r, which is securely fastened at its lower end to the case A, its upper or slotted end extending up through an elongated slot, Z, in the disk D. The extension h of the plate E is passed through the slotted end of the plate 70, and afterward bent around the same, thus making a hinged connectionbetween the plates ,k and E. The disk D has a slot, m, diametrically opposite the slot Z, through which passes the upper end of a spring-catch, F, secured at its lower end to the case A. This catch F,

when the plate E is in position over the mouth (1, extends over the end of the extension i, and thus firmly holds the packing g down upon the neck of the ink-receptacle, and by pressing the catch outward it will be disengaged from the extension of the plate and allow the ICO sible for the ink to escape while the inkstand is being carried in the pocket.

The peculiar form also of the ease and cover renders it more convenient to carry on the person than those pocketinkstands having a high neck, while the inkst-and constructed in accordance with my invention not only possesses the many advantages above enumerated, but may be manufactured and placed in the market at a very small cost, thus bringing it within the reach of those requiring such an article.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
