UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC G. RAFFEL, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
COMBINED BOOK-STRAP AND SCHOLARS COMPANION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,942, dated December 24, 1889.
Application filed May 13, 1889. Serial No. 310,658. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC GfRAFFEL, acitizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gombined Book-Strap and Scholars Companion, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates tea combined bookstrap and scholars companion, and is illustrated in the which I Figure 1 is a side view of the device ready to be attached to the books. Fig. 2 is an end view of parts seen in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a Vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 4 shows the end of the device, the closing-plate being removed. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section showing the clamping or base plate. Figs. 6 and 7 show two views of the winder.
The handle A is hollow, being a tube, and serves as a receptacle for slate and lead pencils, pen-holders, and like articles used by school-children. A base-plate B, which is to accompanying drawings, in
rest upon the books, is attached in some suitable way tothe tubular handle. In the present instance at each end of this plate'is a right-angled extension 0, and near the said end extension is an adjoining plate (Z, parallel therewith, but leaving a space 6 between them. A winder stem or spool F has a journal g at one end, which turns freely in a hole h in the said adjoining plate 01, and said stem has at the other end a fiat or square shank t, which loosely occupies a slot in the end extension c. This slot is shaped somethinglike an ordinary key-hole-that is, it is round at the top, as at 3', and large enough for the flat or square shank '2; to turn therein. The slot is straight and narrow at the lower part, as at It, and when occupied by the fiat or square shank 2' serves to hold it from turning. The fiat shank has an attached ring 1, by grasping which the winder-stem may readily be turned. The winder-stem F has a slot m, and the tape or strap N, which is to pass around the book, is in this slot, and said tape or strap is preferably endless. The base-plate has two slots 0 in the space e, and by this construction the winderstem may be turned to wind the tape on its central part, and when wound tight the shank end may be lowered to place its flat part '6 in the narrow end of the slot, where it will be held and prevented from unwinding.
As a separate or independent winder-stem winds each tape or strap, it will be seen one strap may be wound more or less than the other, thus adapting the device not only to books, but to bundles of irregular shape.
Each end of the tube-is closed bya plate 19, which is pivoted at g. It is immaterial whether both ends or only one of the tube is open. I
One surface of the base-plate B may be made rough in any suitable manner to serve for sharpening slate-pencils.
It is obvious that the construction of the parts may be varied, and my invention therefore is not limited to the precise construction shown.
The device is simple and cheap and combines several useful features, and may be used for other purposes than books.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A combined book-strap and scholars companion, consistingof the hollow handle A, open at the end, a movable plate to close said open e11d,a baseplate, two winder-stems, and a tape or strap attached to each winderstem.
2. A combined book-strap and seholars companion, consisting of the hollow handle A, open at the end, a movable plate to close said open end, a base-plate, each end of which is connected with the .hollow handle by two parallel plates extending at right angles from said base-plate, two winder-stems, one being in each space between said parallel plates, and a tape or strap attached to each winder-stem.
3. The combination of the tube open at the end, a movable plate to close said open end, a base-plate, two winder-stems F, turning in a slot-bearing which serves to hold it from unwinding, and a tape or strap attached to each winder-stem.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
