ADJUSTABLE OUTRIGGER FOB BOATS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known. that L'PAUL'GEPACK, subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, re-
siding at McKees Rocks, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Outriggers for Boats,
7 of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in adjustable outriggers for boats.
The primary object of this invention is. to provide outrigger floats laterally positionable at adjusted distances exteriorly of the boat sides.
A further object is to provide outrigger means positioned at opposite sides of aboat and adapted to be placed a distance apart equal to the entire length of the boat and being capable of withdrawal when desired to lie in a position only slightly spaced from the opposite gunwales of the boat.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of thisapplication and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a top plan viewof a boat provided with the present device. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional central view thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of one of the floats with the connected end of its supporting means and shown upon an enlarged scale, and Fig. 4: is a vertical section through a portion of the side of the boat and the adjacent portions of one of the outrigger supports.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the boat 10 is illustrated as provided with oppositely positioned hollow floats 11 serviceable as Outriggers and positioned in parallelism and extending longitudinally of the boat. A form of lazy-tongs 12 constitutes a supporting bracket for each of the floats being secured as at 13 to the adjacent Specification of Letters Patent.
outer side of the boat, and at 14 to the inner side of the float. An actuating rod float as at 16 while its inner end projects through a perforation 17 in the boat side pivots 21 and between said outer pivots and the boat and the float. Bythis arrangement it will be evident that when the rod 15 is pulled inwardly by means of the handle 18 and the float is likewise inwardly positioned, the lazy-tongs which supports the float will be in its folded or closed position thus placing all of the springs 22 under tension by reason of the same being compressed. 'Upon releasing the pawl 19 from the teeth 20, the
springs 22 will automatically open the lazytong and position the float carried thereby outwardly for use as an outrigger. It will be evident that the two floats are independently operable and that by reason of the pawl and teeth, the floats may be placed at different desired distances outwardly of the boat sides, the rod 15 being used for adjusting the same. v
It will of course be understood that the outrigger floats are adapted for use in rough weather for maintaining the equilibrium of the boat and to prevent the boat from rocking and side tipping through the action of the waves and that the outriggers being in the form of floats also prevents any capsizing or sinking of the boat.
While the forms of the invention herein shown and described are what are believed to be the preferred embodimentsthereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of'the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:--
1. A boat outrigger comprising a hollow Patented Mar. 23, 1915.
Application filed November 4, 1914. Serial No.j870,231.
15 is provided for each float and is fixedly secured at one end to'the and through said pivots, and. with. its outer end rigidly secured to said float, and. having top notches thereon, expansion springs encircling said rod and positioned between said pivots, a pawl carried by the boat and adapted for engaging the; said notches. withsaid springs compressed when the float is positioned adjacent the boat side and an operating handle upon the inner end of said rodand within the boat.
2. A device of the class described; comprising a hollow float positioned outwardly of a boat and extending longitudinally thereof, a bracket in the form of lazy-tongs having pivotal connection between the said boat and float, an actuating rod sl'id abl y positioned through the side of said boat and through said brackets and having its outer end secured to the float, and having notches insaeae in its upper side, expansion springs encircling said rod. and positioned, between said lazy-tongs and the boat and said float, the said lazy-tongs being normally positioned unfolded with the float positioned; outwardly and. a pawl; carried. within the boat and adaptedfor engaging said notches for retaining said rod and float in their adjusted positions.
3.. A boat outrigger comprising a pair of floats, adjustable means for supporting said floats on the boat, means for holding the floats in position adjacent the boat, and means associated with the last-named means for moving the floats outwardly when said last-named means is made inoperative.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
