CHRISTIAN C. SCHWNER, OF VVINTERSET, IOVA.
HAM E-TUG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,2o, dated october 9, 1883. Application filed April r1, 1883. (No modell) To all zzz/tom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN C. SCHWA- NER, of Vinterset, -in the county of Madison and State of Iowa, have invented an Improved Harness Hame-Tug, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to diminish the cost and increase the efficiency and durability of a hame-tug, and also to thereby im- Io harness.
It consists, first, in forming a metal strap or base-piece adapted to be covered by nailing or tacking leather thereto by means of common tacks, and combining ametal clamping-plate, metal loops, a haine-tug clip, and one piece of a two-part trace-buckle therewith by means of hinge-sections formed integral with the metal base and the metal cover or clamping-plate; second, in the manner of forming a metal hametug section and loop integral with each other to produce a iiexible joint and adjustable loop in the complete hame-tug at a point that will allow the tug to bend and adjust itself relative 2 5 to the shoulder of 0a `horse and the collar on the horse, all as hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure l of my accompanying drawings is a perspective view of my improved hame-tug. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a top view of my metal base-piece. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of one of the ends, and Fig. 5 atransverse section of Fig. 3. Fig. 6, shows the metal top plate or clamping-cover in an inverted posi-tion. Fig. 7 is alongitudinal section, and Fig. 8 a transverse section, of Fig. 6. Fig. 9 is a top view, showing part of a buckle hinged to the rear end of my tug, and a cockeyeclip to the front end, to produce a short tug, in such a manner that they can be readily detached and replaced at pleasure. Fig. 10 is a transverse section near a loop, and looking toward the loop. Fig. ll is a longii tudinal section, showing the ns on the pivotal bar of a loop. Fig. l2 is a transverse section, showing one of the fins on the loop. Jointly considered, these gures clearly illustrate the construction, and operation, and utility of my complete invention.
a. is the flat body of my metal base-plate. 5o It has flanges a at its sides, at the top edges, to strengthen it and to form a panel prove the artistic appearance of a completeI 'Within which to lay a corresponding strip of leather. Y
a are open hinge-sections formed integral with the ends of the metal strap a in such a manner that the cross-bar of a metal loop, buckle, or cockeye-clip can be readily inserted, and secured thereto by means of the overlapping ends of the clamping-plate.
a are screw-seats formed integral with the ends of the same strap and base, a.
bis a metal plate corresponding in length with the part c. It is preferably oval on its top surface and ribbed on its fiat under side. It has transverse bearings b, adapted to admit the cross-bars of metal loops, and to facilitate pivoting and securing loops to the complete tug or loops may be cast solid therewith.
b are hinge-sections formed integral with the ends of the plate b, and adapted in form to overlap the cross-bar of a loop, buckle, or cockeye-clip placed in the hingesection a of the base-piece c.
b are screw-holes in the plate b, coinciding with the fixed nuts or screw-seats c in the base-plate c.
c c are the ends, c the top cross-bar and loop, and c the parallel cross-bars, of my hame` tug section, cast complete in one piece for the purpose of making a fieXible joint in a long hame-tug.
d is the cross-bar of my improved metal loop, having fins d formed integral with its sides to restrict the rocking motion of the bar and complete loop, and to hold the loop at right angles relative to the tug.
To construct a complete tug without stitching, I first inlay a piece of leather, f, upon the flanged top surface ofthe metal strap and base c, and then bend the edges of apiece of leather, g, around and over the base, to overlap the leather j', and to fasten them together by sim ply driving common tacks through the parallel and meeting edges of the cover g and down through the leather f, to be clinched upon the top surface ofthe metal base c, as clearly shown in Figs. 10, 11, and 12. To cushion the edges `of the metal base, I simply wrap a strip of cloth or other suitable flexible material upon the metal, as indicated in Fig. 3, before covering it with leather. I next place my hametug section and loop, or a cockeye hame-clip,
roo
ing plate b (after it is extended through metalor leather loops) upon the leather-covered base', and then inserting screws Nos. l and 2` into the coinciding openings or screw-seats a 1o and b, to clamp and fasten the parts together and to nishthe tug. I claim as my invention- 1. A metal strap and base-piece for a hametug, having hinged section at each end, and perr 5 forations or screw-seats, and flanged panels adapting it to have a leather covering, a metal hanne-clip, loops, and a buckle Vdetachably connected therewith by means of a clampingplate7 to produce a complete haine-tug without stitching.
2, The combination of the metal tug-strap c, having hinge-sections a and nuts or screwseats a, the metal tug-section and loop c c c, one or more loops, a trace-buckle or 'part of a 25 buckle, and a metal clamping-plate, b b" b,
substantially as shown and described, to produce a long and jointed haine-tug.
3. The combination of the metal tug-strap a a a, having aleather covering, a cockeye Y hame-,clip, one or more loops, and a metal 3o clamping-plate, b b b, substantially as set forth, to produce a short hame-tug.
4. A metal haine-tug section and loop composed ofthe ends c, topv bar, c', and two parallel bars, c, in combination with the hame- 35 tug, for the purpose specied. Y r
'5. An improved hame-tug, composed of a metal strap and base having hinge-sections and perforations or screw-seats at its ends, a leather covering, ametal clamping-.plate having hinge- 4o sections and perforations coinciding with the hinge-sections and perforations or screw-seats in said strap and base, a detachable hameclip, a detachable buckle or part of a tracebuckle, and one or more detachable loops, in 45 the manner set forth.
