Specification of j'Letters Patent.
PatentedDec. .l, 1908.
Application filed Jul y 11, 1908. Serial Np. $143,024.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEROYHOLDING, citizen of the United States residing at :Browning, in the county of Linn and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blind-Bridles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in harness, relating more particularly to an improved blind bridle construction, and the object of the invention is an improved connection which is arranged to efi'ectually attach the winker stay or strap to the winker or blind in such a manner as to permit the stay to be quickly and easily detached from the winker, or regulated in length so as to give the winker more or less play, according as desired, which embodies unusual simplicity, durability and strength and is arranged to withstand excessive strain and thus prevent the winker strap from becoming accidentally detached from the winker under tension, and which possesses numerous other advantages that will be at once apparent, as the invention is disclosed, over the customary arrangement of stitching the stay to the winker.
Vith this and other objects in view that will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe, and then point out the novel features thereof in the appended claim.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, and to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the application of my improved blind bridle; Fig. 2 is a view in elevation thereof, partly broken away; and, Fig. 3 is a section on the line 00-00 of Fig. 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing, by the same reference characters.
My improved connection is designed to be applied to a bridle A which may be of any desired or suitable construction or design, with the exception that it embodies winker straps or stays 1, and winkers 2 which are secured at their rear ends to thecheek straps,
- or otherwise suitably supported in proximity to the horses eyes, with their forward ends adapted to swing outwardly therefrom and designed for attachmenttothe winker stays to .limitsuch outward movement.
The winkers 2 are of the customary construction, and each winker embodies a preferably metallic dished winker plate 3 and winker leathers 4 which extend along the opposite sides of the winker plate and project therebeyond with such projecting portions sewed together, as shown, to retain the winker plate securely in a position to give the winker the desired contour and stiffness.
In carrying out my invention, I provide preferably metallic attaching members, each of which embodies a shank 5 that is interposed between the winker leathers 4 of the respective winkers and is preferably formed with an opening 6 extending therethrough, by means of-which it is permanently and pivotally secured to the upper forward corner of the corresponding winker plate 3, as by a rivet or the like extending therethrough. The shank passes outwardly between the winker leathers 4, and is formed beyond the margin of the latter with a preferably elongated eye 7 the stitching around the winker leathers being-preferably broken away or terminated on each side of the shank, so as to permit the latter to have a slight rotary movement about its pivot and thus prevent the shank from chafing 01' abrading the stitching to possibly sever the same. The elongated eye 7 is designed to be engaged by an adjustable loop 8 provided at the free end of the corresponding winker stay 1, said winker stay, in the present instance, being provided at an intermediate point with a buckle 9, and the extremity of the stay or strap being passed through the eye 7 and engaged with said buckle to constitute such loop 8 that may be obviously quickly and conveniently detached from the eye or may be regulated in length to afford an adjustable connection between the winker stay and the winker, and thus permit the latter to have greater or less play, according as may be required with the horse upon which my improved bridle is employed.
From the above description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be apparent that I have provided a simple, durable and efiicient arrangement of strap parts that embodies an improved connection between the winker stay and winker, which affords novel and convenient means for detaching the winker stay from the winker or adjusting the former to regulate the-play of the latter, said connection being easily and cheaply manufactured and consisting of comparatively few parts that may be readily assembled.
Having thus described the invention, What I claim is: r
In a blind bridle, the combination of a Winker or blind consisting of Winker leathers and a \vinker plate located between the same, a Winker stay provided With an adjustable loop, a metallic attaching member comprising a shank interposed between the Winker leathers and pivotally secured to the Winker plate, and an elongated eye 15 formed on said shank beyond the margin of the Winker and arranged to be engaged by the adjustable loop. I
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
