Description
STATES PATENT OFFICE.
vJOll'N DIOKSON, JR., OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
HAT CONFORMATU'RE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,564, dated June 5, 1860.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN DICKsoN, Jr., of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Hat Conformatures and Sizers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed l drawing, making part of this speciication,
wherein- Figure l, is a plan of my said instrument and Fig. 2, is a vertical section of the same.
Similar letters indicate the same parts.
The shape of a persons head has heretofore been taken by a conformature made of slides and levers, and the form was marked on a paper. These instruments are costly, and difiiculty arises in denoting the exact shape after the conformature has been changed to suit the head of another individual.
The nature of my said invention consists in an extension band and radial supports thereto in combination with a sizer attached to said extension band which denotes the size of hat regardless of shape, the parts being constructed in such a manner that the shape can be taken in said conformature.
from a hat worn by the individual, and then the new hat can be brought to the same shape by ironing while on the said conformature. I am thus enabled by this instrument not only to obtain a block of the exact size and shape for the hat, but also to denote the size of hat to which said conformature can be applied and ironed into shape so as to be comfortable for the person wearing the same.
In the drawing a, is a ring or ellipse from which the pipes b, l), radiate, and to which ring said pipes are iirmly attached; c, c, are slides within these pipes terminating in the form of buttons as shown or in any other convenient shape. The pipes b, b, are split at their outer ends, and receive the collars d, d, so as to conne the slides at any given point by friction and pressure of the split ends of said pipes as said collars are slid back upon their conical or slightly tapering ends. A screw thread might be formed laround these tapering ends or any other device substituted for holding the slides c, c, in place when they are adjusted.
e, e, are metallic bands surrounding these slides, and the ends of one of these metallic bands are fitted to take slots or mortises in the other band so that they can be slidden in or out to extend or diminish the size of the conformature, and the middle parts of these bands are attached at the front and back slides c, c, of the conformature.
The operation will now be apparent, for by placing the conformature in a hat and extending the bands e, e, to the sides of said hat they assume the proper shape, bein(y of rather thin material, and then by sliding out and clamping the radial slides c, c, the bands e, e, are sustained in the exact shape of said hat and when placed in a new hat give to the same the proper shape which is retained by ironing down the brim with the conformature in place.
In order to denote the size I make use of the sizer f, composed of two strips of metal attached to the ends of one of the bands e, and passing through the loop of metal 1, and on one of these strips the size is marked to be read at the end of the other strip and denote the size of hat to which the conformature is applied as seen in Fig. 2.
The benefits resulting from my invention in obtaining easy and properly shaped hats will be apparent and the facility with which said instrument can be applied, and the durability and cheapness thereof will also be manifest.
- l/Vhat I desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s- In combination with the hat conformature constructed as described, the sizer f, formed of two metallic strips connected to t-he ends of one of the extension bands (6,) to measure the size of hat regardless of the shape, at the same time that said shape is taken by said conformature as specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this twenty third day of April JOHN DICKSON, JR. Witnesses:
LEMUEL W. SERRELL, CHAs. H. SMITH.
