Rutland, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented a "new and useful Improvement in Buttons; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists of a button having a body of vegetable ivory or other suitable ma terial, in combination with an ornamental metal face, and with a loop, shanks, or pins, forming a part of the metal of the face and extended to form the eye of the button; and

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a face view of a plain button, preferably of vegetable ivory, having an ornamental metal face. Fig. 2 is a section inwhich the co nnecting-pin which holds the metal to the body of the button is extended to form the eye of the button. Fig. 3 is a face view of a button having a similar metal face and extended connection, forming the loop, with an interposed piece of pearl. Fig. 4 is a section of the same.
In carrying out my invention I form the body-of the button a, Fig. 1, of any desired shape. The eye may be formed, if desired, in the body of the button itself, as shown in Fig. 2. The metal ornament b may be of any fanciful shape desired-as, for example, a branch. I'prefer to form it of some suitable metal, which may be colored, or not, but which will form a contrast with the material of the button.
In Fig. 2 I have shown the preferred form of making the button and securing the metal ornament to the body. In this form I extend the pins, which I set closer together, beyond the lower surface of the button,'and as Imake one longer than the other, the eye of the button is readily formed by bending this pin in the required shape the end bearing against that of the shorter pin and secured to it in any suitable manner. In this case a single hole is sufficient through the center of the button, and the pins composing the shank are passed through this opening and brought together on; the other side to form the eye, by which the button may be attached to the fabric. The metal ornament is attached to this shank, or, rather, the shank forms apart of the ornament. In order to hold the ornament snugly in place, and atthe same time to'make a neat finish for thelunder side of the button, I provide a thin metal washer, c, which fits in a recess in the button adapted to receive it. It also has a central opening, through which the shank passes, and in order to retain the washer in place I spread apart the prongs of the eye at that point, and this is suificient to keep the. washer in place and prevent the metal ornament from rising from the face of the button.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown another form of my invention. In these figures the shank and metal ornament are the same as those in the figures last described. applicable to any size of buttons, is specially suitableto buttons of larger-size- The parts are alike in all respects, except as to size, and, instead of having simply the button-body and metal ornament, I provide an intermediate. disk of pearl or other suitable material, which I interpose'between the body of the button and the ornament. The shank passes through all, and is secured in the manner described.
What I claim as my invention is A button composed of any suitable material or combination of materials and provided with a metal ornament on its face, said ornament having a pin or pins on its lower surface, which is passed through the body of the button and bent to form the eye, substantially as described.
