SELF FITTING CLOTHING FORM. No. 282,665. Patented Aug. 7, 1883. 217932. Q Z
' U IT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH B. PAYNE, OF WELLSBURG, NE\V YORK..
SELF-FITTING CLOTHING-FORM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent, No. 282,665, dated August 7, 1883:
Application filed April [4, 1883.
State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Fitting Dress- Forms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a plan view ofthe device. Fig. I 2 is. a sectional detail.
This invention'relates to dress-forms. Its
obj ect is to produce a form which shall be selffitting, and will be adapted to'fit a full suit of mens or boys clothing.
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A represents a frame to be used for holding a full suit of mens apparel, and has the body a and legs a a. This frame is made in two halves, B B, entirely separate and distinct each from the other, each part or half consisting of "ertical wiresb and cross-wires b, as drawn.
Passing down the middle of the frame is a standard, 0, having at its bottom the legbraces 00, which areattached to the legs a a of the frame.
The lower portion, D, of the standard 0 has an enlargement, E, at the top, and through this enlargement and down into the portion D is made a bore, (1. Within the enlargement this bore is increasedin size, so as to form a chamber, a.
Passing through the end 6 e of the enlargement are two seats, e e, the bottoms of which are formed by diaphragms 6 o having at their centers holes leading from the seats e 0 into the chamber 0.
Passing down the bore d is the stem f of handle F, to which stem two cords, f f, are fastened within the chamber 0, such cords'passing out through the holes. Seated in the seats e" e are two stems, G G, having the bores g g, the
(No model.)
said stems resting against the diaphragms 6 6 and the cords ff passing through the bores gg. Surrounding the stems G G are springs H, which bear against the ends of the enl. rgement/E at one end and the frame A at the other. The cords f f pass through these springs, and both cords and springs are secured to the frame A.
N ear the top the handle F is provided with a ring, f from which wires f run to the frame A, thus bracing the standard at the top. At various points loops K are secured to one of the halves B B and tongues L-to the other half, such tongues engaging the loops and keeping the halves in fproper position. At the top one half is provided with a hook, Z, adapted to catch over the top of the other half and hold the two together when closed.
In use the handle F is turned, winding the cords f f about the stem f in the chamber 0, drawing the halves together and compressing the springs. In this position they are held by catching the hook Z over the top of the opposite half. The garments of the suit are then far apart as the garments will allow, bringing the latter to their full and proper size and shape and fitting perfectly.
By the adjustability of this frame it is adapted for garments of different sizes, as it is compressed for putting the garments 011, and the spring spreads it out to the proper distance.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. Aself-fitting form of the shape described, and adapted for as set forth.
2. The self-f1tting frame A, consisting of the two halves B, each having a body, I), and a leg, a, as set forth.
3'. The self-fitting frame A, constructed as set forth, in combination with the standard 0 and means, substantially as described, for closing and opening the halves, as set forth.
a full suit of mens garments,
4. The combination of the halves B B, sta-nl- In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my ard 0, consisting of the bottom portion, D, and own I affix my signature in presence of two handle F, the cords f f, and springs G G, as witnesses. described. JOSEPH B. PAYNE. 5 5. The self-fitti 11g frame A, having the hook WVitnesses:
HHO. NORTH,
Z, for holding the two halves together when I closed, as set forth. G130. F. GRAT-TAM.
