EXTENSION SLIDE FOR TABLE TOPS Filed Oct. 5, 1956 A4 WQKQW F166 42 &\\\\@ 9 53 'INVENTOR HENRY J. GARIEPY 'llllll Mfq ATTORNEY United States Patent 2,815,257 EXTENSION SLIDE FOR TABLE TOPS Henry J. Gariepy, South Ashburnham, Mass. Application October 5, 1956, Serial No. 614,234 2 Claims. (Cl. 311-71) This invention relates to metallic guide connections between pairs of relatively slidable table top members for extensible tables wherein the legs and supporting frame of the table are not adjustable or extensible but are made in fixed permanent form and support the sliding table top members which may abut centrally of the table or which may be selectively withdrawn to allow the insertion of a leaf in the top to make it longer.
The principal object of the present invention resides in the provision of a new and improved metallic slidable connection or table slide for the table top members in which the same is made in a simple, inexpensive and very easily applied and operated construction comprising an elongated tubular member having an end flange secured to an end portion of the fixed frame of the table and engaged with a smaller telescoping tubular member at the opposite end thereof for accommodation to table frames of different sizes, said first-named tubular member being provided with 'a pair of slidable tubular brackets thereon each of which is provided with a fiat plate for securement to the under side of one of the movable table top members to the end that but a single table slide is necessary for a table although a plurality of such slides may be applied if desired, and also resulting in an extremely simple, efficient and inexpensive table slide of the class described.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of the table illustrating the extension of the table top members;
Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1;
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are enlarged views on the respective lines in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 6 is a sectional view illustrating a modification.
In carrying out the present invention, there are provided conventional table leg members 10 which are joined together in fixed relation by a fixed box frame comprising side members 12 and 14 and end members 16 and 18. Other parts of the table may be made as desired and parts and fastenings have been omitted for clarity of illustration of the invention, but it is to be particularly noted that the frame comprising members 12, 14, 16 and 18 is a rigid box-like member and its one purpose is to support in horizontal position the two table top members 20 and 22 which are slidable with respect to the frame "above described, and are supported thereon in conjunction with the table slide to be described.
Upon moving the table top members 20 and 22 endwise of the table as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, a gap is provided centrally of the table in which a leaf may be inserted for the purpose of forming a smooth level extended table top.
The table slide of the present invention comprises an elongated hollow tube 24 which is provided with a foot or flange 26 at one end thereof, this foot or flange being attached to the frame member 16 by any convenient means such as screws 28. This positions the tubular member 24 horizontally just below the table top members 20 and 22 and the tubular member has a length just short of the distance between the frame members 16 and 18.
A smaller and shorter tubular member 30 is provided with a similar foot or flange 32 secured by fasteners 34 to the end member 18 and aligned with the open end of tube 24 so as to provide 'a straight continuous support beneath the table top members 20 and 22, such support being adjustable to fit tables of different sizes as to the installation of the table slide.
The tubular member 24 is provided with a pair of sliding brackets which are alike and are generally indicated by the numeral 36. Each bracket comprises a cylindrical sleeve 40 which is slidably mounted on the tubular member 24 and has a tangentially arranged flat plate 42 thereon provided with fasteners 44 on which it is secured to a respective table top member 20 and 22 as clearly apparent from Figs. 1 and 2. There also may be provided stop members 46 to limit the sliding motion of the brackets toward each other to correspond with the abutment of the adjacent edges of the table top members.
It will be seen that this invention provides a very simple and inexpensive table slide which is very easily applied to the frame members of the table and it will be noted in Figs. 3, 4 and 5 that the feet or flanges at the ends of the tubular members 24 and 30 depend in such a way that the fasteners 34 are applicable to the end members below the respective tubular members, making it easier to assemble the device.
In the modification of the device shown in Fig. 6, there is provided a spring-pressed ball detent 50 mounted for instance on a stem 51 and retractable against the action of spring 52 for projecting through a hole 53 in the tube 24 in order to releasably hold the sleeve 36 in the position of Fig. 2. By this construction, the table may be closed as shown in solid lines in Fig. 2 and the table top members 20 and 22 will not accidentally slide apart.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is:
1. Table slide structure comprising a generally hollow elongated tubular member, a transversely extending flange at one end thereof, the opposite end being open, means to secure said flange to the frame of a table at right angles to the tubular member, a second smaller tubular member telescopically engaged with the first member at the open end thereof, and means securing said second telescopic member to an opposite frame member of the table, a pair of slidable sleeves mounted on the first-named tubular member, a tangential flat plate on each sleeve, and means for securing the respective flat plates to separate table top members.
2. Table slide structure comprising a generally hollow elongated tubular member, a transversely extending flange at one end thereof, the opposite end being open, means to secure said flange to the frame of a table at right angles to the tubular member, a second smaller tubular member telescopically engaged with the first member at the open end thereof, and a like flange securing said second telescopic member to an opposite frame member of the table, a pair of slidable sleeves mounted on the first-named tubular member, a tangential flat plate on each sleeve, and means for securing the respective flat plates to separate table top members, and means mounted on the first-named tubular member to limit the motion of said sleeves in a direction toward each other.
