Description
V. BENLIAN April 19, 1966 TABLE Filed April 15, 1965 INVENTOR.
VERA BE'NL IAN United States Patent O 3,246,611 TABLE Vera Benlian, Nyack, NY. (142 West End Ave., New York, N.Y. 10023) Filed Apr. 15, 1965, Ser. No. 448,302 Claims. (Cl. 108-1) My invention is directed toward tables.
It is an object of my invention to provide a new and improved table that can be collapsed or erected easily.
Another object is to provide a new and improved table of the character indicated that is adjustable both in length and height.
Still another object is to provide a new and improved table of the character indicated that can be adjusted to support reading material at a suitably inclined angle.
Yet another object is to provide a new and improved table of the character indicated having a table top adjustable in width.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of my invention will now be explained with reference both to this specification and to the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of my invention as shown in partially collapsed position;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of my invention in fully collapsed position;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of my invention as used as a reading table;
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of my invention illustrating the adjustments in length and height;
FIG. 5 is a cross sectional view taken along 55 in FIG. 4;
FIG. 6 is a perspective detail view of a part used in my invention;
FIG. 7 is a cross sectional view taken along 7-7 in FIG. 4;
FIG. 8 is a side view of the table top adjustment of my invention;
FIG. 9 is a plan view of my invention with table top fully extended; and
FIG. 10 is a side view of the support separation adjustment of my invention.
Referring now to FIGS. 1-10, there is shown first, second, third and fourth L shaped hollow tubular members 12, 14, 16 and 18 having identical outer diameters, each member having a relatively short leg and a relatively long leg. I further provide first, second, third and fourth hollow tubes 20, 22, 24 and 26 open at both ends, these tubes having identical inner diameters larger than the outer diameters of the members. Tubes 20 and 22 have equal relatively short lengths; tubes 24 and 26 have equal relatively long lengths.
Tube 20 slips over the short legs of members 12 and 14 to join same together; tube 22 slips over the short legs of members 16 and 18 to join same together; tube 24 slips over the long legs of members 14 and 16 to join same together; tube 26 slips over the long legs of members 12 and 18 to join same together. The long legs joined in both longer tubes can be moved toward or away from each other to vary the length of the structure so far described.
Each of tubes 20 and 22 are rotatable about the short legs of the joined member and have a plurality of holes 28 at each end thereof which can be engaged by a corresponding prong 30 in a flexible strip 32 secured at its other end to an appropriate one of the short legs whereby each tube 20 or 22 can be indexed to various positions of rotation.
Secured to each of tubes 20 and 22 are a pair of out- Patented Apr. 19, 1966 ice wardly extending spaced apart elongated legs or supports 34 which are joined together by first and second horizontally extending slotted members 36 and 40 which in turn are held together by a thumbscrew 38 riding in slots 40 common to both said members 36 and 40 whereby these members 36 and 40 can be moved toward and away from each other to adjust the separation between individual supports in each pair. Each support is formed from a plurality of elongated telescoping sections 42 whereby the height of each support can be adjusted. When sections 42 are fully telescoped into each other, rotation of tubes 20 and 22 permtis these supports to be folded under to collapse the unit.
First and second parallel channel guides 44 and 46 span tubes 24 and 26 in spaced apart positions. A table top having first and second fiat plates 48 and 50 hinged together at 52 slides in these guides. In one position, plate 48 rests on top of plate 50 and is held in place by a lip 54 or plate 50. In a second position, these plates are made coplanar, and the top is slid through the guides to overlap tubes 24 and 26.
In a third position plate 48 can be held in an inclined position with respect to plate 50 by means of arm 56 pivotally secured at one end to plate 48 and having at the other end a prong adapted to engage one or another of holes 58 in plate 60 secured to the side of channel guide 44.
The resulting article is a table which can be adjusted in length and/ or width of table top and/or height and/ or spread of legs or supports. It can be used as a reading table. It is light in weight and can be readily erected or collapsed as required.
While I have described my invention with particular reference to the drawings, my protection is to be limited only by the terms of the claims which follow.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new 1. A table comprising first, second, third and fourth L and desire to secure by Letters Patent: shaped hollow tubular members having identical outer diameters, each member having a first relatively short leg and a second relatively long leg, first, second, third and fourth hollow tubes open at both ends, said tubes having identical inner diameters larger than the outer diameters of the members, said first and second tubes having equal relatively short lengths, said third and fourth tubes having equal relatively long lengths, said first tube being fitted over the short legs of said first and second members to join same together, said second tube being fitted over the short legs of said third and fourth members to join same together, the third tube being fitted over the long legs of the first and third members to join same together, the fourth tube being fitted over the long legs of the second and fourth members to join same together, first and second parallel channel guides extending transversely between the third and fourth tubes in spaced apart positions, a table top extending between said guides and slidably engaging same, a first pair of elongated supports secured to said first tube, and a second pair of elongated supports secured to said second tube.
2. A table as set forth in claim 1 wherein each of said first and second tubes is rotatable about the short legs respectively associated therewith whereby each pair of supports can be rotated between collapsed and extended positions.
3. A table as set forth in claim 2 wherein each pair of supports is provided with means to adjust the horizontal separation between the two supports in the pair.
4. A table as set forth in claim 3 wherein each separate support consists of a plurality of elongated sections telescopically fitting within one another.
