4 Claims. (Cl. 45-68.?!)
This invention relates to a table cover provided with a replaceable centerpiece.
An object of the invention is to provide a table cover which is constructed to receive and retain a centerpiece in operative position therewith and which permits of the convenient removal and replacement of the centerpiece.
Another object of the invention is to provide a table cover in which the replaceable centerpiece is of relatively inexpensive material so that the same may be replaced when soiled and discarded at small cost.
Another object of the invention is to provide a table cover in which the centerpiece may bear advertising or personalized presentations for use by clubs, hotels, railroad dining cars and the like.
The invention comprehends a table cover for use in homes, clubs, hotels, railroad dining cars and the like as a protection or ornamental covering for tables which permits of the convenient removal of the centerpiece after each meal or when the same becomes soiled and which provides an attractive and decorative cover for the table and may be replaced at small cost without removing the cover.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a table cover of said character which drapes about the sides of the table forming a valance.
With the foregoing and other objects in view reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiments are illustrated.
In the drawings:
Fig. l is a plan view of a table cover constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken approximately on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a table cover constructed in accordance with the invention and illustrating a modified form thereof.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken approximately on line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrating the table cover applied to a table.
The table cover may be fashioned of any desired material such as Woven fabric, lace, paper or synthetic plastic material, and the centerpiece may be of any of the aforesaid materials and may also be absorbent for taking up moisture or liquids.
Referring to the drawings the cover is illustrated in its application to a cover for a rectangular shaped table but the same may be of circular or other curvilinear formation and the centerpiece 11 is also shown as of rectangular formation but which may be of circular or other curvilinear formation.
As illustrated, the cover 10 is preferably of a size to overlie the top of a table and to extend downwardly about the edge portions thereof as a valance and as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The cover is formed with a continuous recess 12 located inwardly of the side edges thereof and in surrounding relation with the center portion 13. Arranged in overlying relation with the center portion 13 is a centerpiece 11 having its edge portions extending into the recess 12 so as to retain the same in operative position with reference to the cover.
The opposite side portions 14 and 15 and the center portion 13 may be integral or cut from a length of material which is doubled or looped into three ply thickness and secured three ply relation by lines of stitching 16 to form the portions of the recess 12 between the plies at the juncture of the side portions 14 and 15 and the center portion 13. The opposite side portions 17 and 18 are doubled or looped into three ply thickness and secured together in said three ply thickness and to the inner edges of the center portion 13 by lines of stitching 19 so as to form the portions of. the; recess 12 between the plies bordering the inner edges of the side portions 17 and 18. The side portions 17 and 18 may be secured to the side portions 14 and 15 by a continuation of the lines of stitching 16.
The cover may be formed as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, that is without the center portion 13 shown in Figs. 1 and 2 thereof. In this modification of the invention the cover similarly includes a continuous recess 31 located inwardly of the side edges thereof and in surrounding relation with a rectangular opening 32. The centerpiece 33 similar to the centerpiece 11 in the previous form of the invention is adapted to cover the opening 32 and to extend into the recess 31 along the four sides of the centerpiece so as to retain the same in operative position with reference to the cover.
In producing the recess 31 the opposite side portions 34 and the opposite side portions 35 of the cover are doubled-over and secured in doubled-over relation by lines of stitching 36 and 37 with the inner free edge portions 38 thereof extending inwardly and doubled-over and secured by lines of stitching 39 to provide a smooth inner edge defining the opening 32. The side portions 34 are secured to the side portions 35 by a continuation of lines of stitching 36.
There is thus provided a table cover for any type of table which takes the place of the usual tablecloth or table covering and is provided with a removable centerpiece adapted to be replaced when desired.
While the preferred embodiments of the invention are shown and described herein, it is to be understood that the same is not so limited but shall cover and include any and all modifications of the invention which fall within the purview of the claims.
What is claimed is:
l. A table cover including a flexible body adapted to extend over the top of a table and downwardly about the periphery thereof, said flexible body having a continuous portion of a plurality of plies in thickness with the plies secured together and forming a recess therebetween located inwardly of the periphery of the cover and surrounding a central portion thereof, and a replaceable centerpiece fitted into said recess at its periphery for retaining the centerpiece in operative position with reference to the cover.
2. A table cover including a flexible center portion and a flexible peripheral body portion adapted to extend partly over the top of a table and downwardly about the periphery thereof, said peripheral body portion being of a plurality of plies in thickness at the inner peripheral edge thereof with the plies secured together and forming a recess therebetween with the under ply connected with said flexible center portion, and a replaceable centerpiece adapted to overlie said central portion and to extend into said recess about the periphery of said body portion for retaining the centerpiece in operative position with reference to the peripheral body portion.
3. A table cover including a peripheral body having inner and outer peripheral edges, said peripheral body having an under ply secured thereto and extending continuously about the inner peripheral edge portion thereof, an auxiliary ply underlying the said first named ply at least on opposite portions thereof and secured to said peripheral body to form a recess extending under said peripheral body, and a replaceable centerpiece extending under said peripheral body continuously about the inner peripheral edge portion thereof and into said recess for retaining the replaceable centerpiece in operative position with reference to the peripheral body and'with the outer peripheral edge portion of the centerpiece concealed beneath the peripheral body.
4. A table cover including a peripheral body having inner and outer peripheral edges and adapted to extend about the edge portion of the top of a table and downwardly about the periphery thereof, said peripheral body having an under ply secured thereto and extending continuously about the inner peripheral portion thereof, an
auxiliary ply underlying the said first named ply at least on opposite portions thereof and secured to said peripheral body to form a recess extending under said peripheral body, and a replaceable centerpiece extending under said peripheral body continuously about the inner peripheral edge portion thereof and into said recess for retaining the replaceable centerpiece in operative position with reference to the peripheral body and with the outer peripheral edge portion of the centerpiece concealed beneath the peripheral body.
