Application November 26, 1954, Serial No. 471,372
11 Claims. (Cl. 2-158) This invention relates to improvements in protective hand and wrist covers. More particularly, it pertains to such a cover, or shield, of novel construction including an insulating blank of plastic, or rubber material, between layers of the palm side thereof especially adapted for handling hot kitchen utensils or working in or around kitchen appliances, and the provision of such an article is the principal object of the invention.
Generally, it is an object of the invention to provide such an article that is economical of manufacture, that is washable and will not become matted, that is attractive in appearance, and otherwise intended to overcome the difficulties and disadvantages attendant upon so-called pot holders of conventional manufacture.
More specifically, it is an object of the invention to provide such a hand and wrist covering in which the palm side is composed of a plurality of blanks, including a protective inner insulating blank of plastic material, at least one inner fabric blank, and one outer finish protective blank, the back side being composed of an inner fabric blank and an outer finish protective blank superimposed upon the palm blanks, and means securing together all of the superimposed marginal edges from one to the other side of the wrist, but separately secured together at the remaining transverse marginal wrist edges of the palm and back sides to provide a hand opening therebetween.
Other specific objects of the invention are to provide such an article in which the blanks of the palm side are diagonally stitched together; in which the marginal edges above mentioned are secured by an over-edge strip of material; in which the plastic material in the palm side consists of rubber, preferably having raised projections on both surfaces, and a strengthening sheet of fabric embedded therein; and in which one or both outer finish protective blanks consists of a thermosetting plastic material.
Other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter.
The invention accordingly comprises an article of relation of elements which will be exemplified in the arti-' cle hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention reference should be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a hand and wrist covering article embodied by the invention depicting a separation of the blanks for illustrative purposes;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken along the lines 22 of Fig. 1, and looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a fragmentary portion, considerably enlarged, of a protective insulating material for use in the palm of the article;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view illustrating the use of the invention; and
Fig. 5 is a modified form of construction of such an 2,810,131 Patented Oct. 22, 1957 article also embodied by the same principle of invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is indicated generally at 1 a preferred embodiment of the invention comprising a protective cover for the hand and wrist having. full palm and back sides to be used, for example, in handling hot kitchen utensils and appliances.
The palm side as shown in Fig. l, and indicated gen erally at 11 in Fig. 2, is composed of a plurality of blanks of suitable materials which outline or define a hand and wrist of a user.
The palm side includes a protective inner insulating blank 12 of plastic material. By plastic I mean preferably natural rubber. However, any other suitable form of rubber, whether natural, synthetic or sponge rubber, may be used. Also, any suitable form of thermosetting plastic is contemplated, providing it is substantially equivalent in its characteristics as is the natural rubber which I prefer. Furthermore, as indicated in Fig. 3, the plastic or rubber material is cross-hatched or ribbed in such a manner that it provides projections as indicated at 13 to impart additional gripping or anti-slip characteristics against the utensil to be handled and against the palm side of the hand of the user. Particularly where natural rubber is used, in order to strengthen the same, I prefer to have embedded therein a blank of fabric material as indicated at 14.
As shown in Fig. 1, there is also included for the palm side of the article two inner fabric blanks of material 15' and 16, one on each side of the insulating blank 12. Such material may be relatively thin being fabricated of cheesecloth or scrim cloth.
The exposed surface of the palm side of the article consists of a finish protective blank 17 which can be made attractive in appearance by suitable colors. While this may be made of colored cloth or fabric, the invention also contemplates that the same be made of any suitable thermosetting plastic material.
The back side of the article indicated generally at 11 is composed of at least two blanks such as an inner fabric blank 18, similar to the fabric blanks 15 and 16, and an outer finish protective blank 19 similar to the palm protective finish blank 17, also made either of suitable cloth or thermosetting plastic material.
All of the foregoing blanks are cut the same size and configuration and superimposed upon each other. This can be done with any suitable form of stitching, such as, for example, that indicated at 20 in Fig. 5, or preferably by means of an overedge strip 21. In either case the superimposed peripheral or margin edges of all of the blanks are secured together from one side to the other side of the wrist, but separately secured together at the remaining transveres marginal wrist edges of the palm and back sides to provide a hand opening therebetween. If the over-edge strip is used as the securing means, it can be fastened in place in any suitable manner such as, by means of the running stitch shown at 22; or, the same can be heat sealed in position by the application on the inner side thereof of a suitable adhesive.
In order to make the palm side of the article compact, and to remove too much play between the blanks, the several layers or blanks f2, 15, 16 and 17 may be stitched together in any suitable manner or design, such as double diagonal stitching 23 in Fig. 1 or the single diagonal or Zig-zag stitching 24 shown in Fig. 5.
Such a hand and wrist protective covering has many advantages. For example, it protects or insulates the hand and wrist from the scorching, burning heat of an oven, broiler or barbecue, as well as from hot pots, pan handles, covers, casserole dishes or anything else normally considered too hot to handle with the bare hands. Furthermore, such an article offers a larger gripping surface than conventional so-called pot holders, and is therefore much safer during use. Again, since the palm area of the article is rubber lined, it is washable and will not become matted.
It will thus be seen that the objects hereinbefore set forth may readily and etfieiently be attained when following the principle above set forth, and since certain changes may be made in the above article and different embodiments of the invention :could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
