United States Patent- GARMENT MARKING APPARATUS Romaine M. Ohlin, Alhambra, Caiif.
Application September 22, 1955, Serial No. 535,870 9 ciaims. (Cl. 33-9 Generally speaking, the present invention relates to the sevw'ng and tailoring arts and, more particularly, to an improved garment marking apparatus adapted to mark a garment being worn by a model at selected regions therearound above an underlying supporting surface upon which the model wearing the garment stands, for the purpose of marking hemline regions, waistline regions and the like.
Applicant is aware of the fact that several skirt hem and waistline marking and/or pinning devices have been invented and developed heretofore for the purpose of marking and/ or pinning the bottom and/ or waistline por= tions of a skirt or dress in a selected horizontal plane at aselected distance above the ground or floor. However, all of such devices known to me have serious disadvantages of one'type or another.
For example, all of such prior art devices known to me mark or pin the hem-line and/or waistline of a g'arment at only one point "at a time and, therefore, req ire multiple repositioning with respect to the dress or skirt being marked and multiple marking or pinning operations. In addition to being multiple, these re-positionings' and marking and/ or pinning operations are sequential. This is extremely undesirable because, between each repositioning of the device with respect to the garment and between each marking and/or pinning operation, an additional chance of error is introduced beeause of the movement involved. This frequently leads to the necessity of completely remarking or repinning the hem-line and/or the waistline after it has been once completed with such a prior art device, because the errors introducedby movement are 'so gross as to be visually observable When the completed demarked line is viewed in its entirety while being worn.
Another serious disadvantage inherent in all such prior art devices known to me is the virtual necessity for the person wearing the garment which is bein marked by such a prior art device, stooping over to adjust or to observe thedev-ice or to operate same, This is extremely undesirable because it introduces additional movement into the operation and leads to even greater errors, and frequently requires additional work to rectify said errors. For further example, no prior art devices known to applicant permit the simultaneous or separate marking of the waistline regions.

From the above basic description of the present invention and preferred complete and sub-combination generic forms thereof, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that virtually all of the hereinabove-mentioned disadvantages of prior art hem-line and/ or waistline garment marking devices are virtually entirely eliminated and overcome in and through the use of the present invention.
For example, the marking apparatus of the present invention will'etfectively mark a hem-line and/or a waistline lying in a selected horizontal plane at a selected distance above the underlying floor, thus eliminating the hereinbefore-mentioned undesirable prior art multiple operations and thus eliminating practically all possibility of error.
Furthermore, the pump means is remotely located with respect to the remainder of the device and thus makes it possible for a single person using the device to virtually instantaneously mark a skirt while standing in a normal position and without the necessity of stooping, squatting or assuming other postures which might conceivably introduce error into the marking operation.
Furthermore, in the preferred form of the present invention, simultaneous or separate marking of the waistline region of the garment is likewise possible while standing in a normal position and without the necessity of assuming unnatural postures; and the preferred form of the present invention carries the marking agent within the hollow tube of the garment marking apparatus.
With the above points in mind, it is an object of the present invention to provide an improved garment marking apparatus capable of operation by a single person to mark a garment being worn by said person substantially therearound in selected horizontal planes at selected heights above an underlying supporting surface and to do so in one operation.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a device of the character set forth in the preceding object, which is of extremely simple, compact, cheap, foolproof construction.
Other and allied objects will become apparent to those skilled in the art after a careful perusal, examination and study of the accompanying illustrations, the present specification and the appended claims.
