UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JHN E. SMITH. OF NEY YORK. N. Y.
FlRE-PROOF GARMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,669, dated. June 19, 1883,
Appliealion tiled March lil, lsrtt,
To 11H [elw/ib it may eoncern:
e it known that I, JouN E. SMITH, ot' the eity and eouiityol' New York and St ate ot' New York, have invented a new aiul usel'nl lniproveiiieiit in ltire-Proot(tai-ments, ot' whieh the following is a speeitieation. ret'erenee being had to the aeeompanying drawings.
'lhe obieet ot' my invention. whieh l designate a tire-eseape garment," ist'o enable persons to eseape through tianie and smoke t'roni burning buildings.
'llie invention eonsists in a loose gown-like garment of' suitable length. iiiade ot' some noneoinbnstible material, or material that will stand a short exposure to tiaine witliont heilig ignited thereby. and havine sleeves t'or the :ii-ins, mittens or gloves t'or the hands. and a eoi'er t'or the head, and preferably provided with one or more eyepieees. through whieh the wearer may look. rlhe gloves or mittens. sleeves. body. head-eovering. and eyepieees are all permanently lioiiied together. so that the only opening in the entire garment is at the bottoni ot' the body. The sleeves are direetly opposite eaeli other. with the thumbs ot' the mittens pointing toward the body, and the eovering t'or the head preterably has eye-pieees on both sides above a point midway between the sleeves. so that the garment is reversible. and may be worn with either side in i'ront. Being thus reversible, it eannot7 during haste and exeitement be put on wrongly.
Referring to the drawings, Figure V1 is a 'ront i'iewot1 a man having one of my iinproyed garments, whieli has two sets ot1 eye-pieees, and is reversible. Fig. .2 is a baek View. eorresponding with Fig. l.
fr is the body ol' the garment; I b, the sleeves; e e, the mittens, with the thumbs i turned or direeted inward toward the body; d. the headeovering. and e e the eye-pieees on one side. Direetly opposite to e e are other similar eye pieees, e' e. These eye-pieees may be eithe'i double, as shown, or single, ot' sniiieient size. lhey maybe of glass or miea and the garment ot' Sonie light and flexible material not readily ignited by flame-sueh as ashestus cloth. thin leather, or any fabric rendered diitienlt ot' eonibastion by the application of some chemicalt'or instance, tungstate 0r phosphate of soda. sulphate of ammonia7 or alum. Silk or woolen eloth may also be used.
(No landet) rlhe gainieiit may lie made seamless. or. it' notF the diti'erent portions ot' whieh it is eoiii posed. inelnding the eye-pieees. may be tasteiied together by any well-known means. suoli as sewing. eeinentiiig. riveting. &e. The gai'- nieiit. (exeeptiug the eyepieees.) itl not ot' leather oil skin. slionld lie ol' t'elt or tightlywoveii elotli, so that smoke will not pass through it too readily.
The wearer an breathe the air eontiued in the garment during the short time that it is intended to be woi'ii.
l will ment ion that the position ol'thethunibs ot' the mittens toward the body is ot' eonsiderable importanee, as in no other position would they allow the garment to be so easily put on as well with one side bet'ore as with the other and niaike it so pert'eetly reversible.
l am aware that heretofore various dresses have been devised tor proteeting persons against tire. smoke, and water. Home ot' these are Ijointed at the neek or waist. or both. and haveopen iiigs t'or respirators, breatliing-t ulies, orair-tulies.besidesthe opening throughwhieh they are put on. My invention ditt'ers t'rom these in being in one pieee. with but the one opening through whieh it is put on; and when it has eye-pieees on both sides and the sleeves arranged as deseribed it eau be worn with with either side in front. lV would remark that by omitting the sleeves my invention would still be useful and would ditiei t'roni others, especially when it is provided with eye-pieees on different sides.
That I elaim as my invention. and desire to seeure by Letters Patent. is-
l. A tire-eseape garment having sleeves with mittens and eyepieees, all formed in one pieee with the body n, and the eomplete garment having but a single opening, as speeiiied.
2. lhe tirefeseape garment herein deseribed. formed or seeured in a single pieee. and hav ing lintY a single opening. eonsisting ot' the body a, the sleeves I. having mittens e. with inwardly-projeeting tliuiiib-pieees i', and opposite sets oteye-pieees, e, in head portion d. as and for the purposes set t'oitli.
JOHN l. SMITH.
