Description

ISAAC BROOKE, OF ROYERS FORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
INKSTAND.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 379,532, dated June 19,1883.
Application filed June 17, 1882. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IsAAcBRooKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Royers Ford, in the county of Montgomery, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Inkstands, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a top or plan view of the inkstand embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, partly sectional.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures. My invention relates to improvements in inkstands having a sliding cover which is operated by a lever to which the weight of the hand is applied.
The invention consists in the construction of the parts, whereby there is a simplification and reduction of expense in the manufacture of inkstands.
7 Referring to the drawings, A represents a base or stand on which is supported the ink well or holder B.
Rising from one end of the base A are lugs C, on which are fitted the j ournals a of a weighted elbow-lever, D, the upper limb whereof has an enlarged portion, D, which stands somewhat upright in front of the top opening of the ink-well, whereby it may be pressed bythe hand in reaching the ink. To said portion D of the lever D are pivoted arms E, which extend horizontally and have connected with them the cover F of the ink-well, said cover sliding and resting on the collar G, which is fixed to the top flange of the ink-well. A portion of the collar G is depressed and the cover F rests on saidportion, and the other portion is elevated and has the arms E sup ported and guided thereon. The innerface of said elevated or top portion is grooved to receive the edge of the cover F, thus forming a tight joint between the parts and completely closing the ink-well against the entrance of dust and air.
It will be seen that when the ink-well is to be opened the hand ispressed against the lever 'D, thus moving the latter toward the inkwell and pushing the cover from the raised portion of the collar G, thus uncovering the ink-well and permitting the pen to be dipped When the hand is removed or the of opening and closing the inkstand or ink-' well is accomplished in an easy, rapid, and almost noiseless manner, and that the, parts of the device are few, simple, and inexpensive.
In order to hold the inlewell firmly on the base, I cast with or secure to the collar G, or a separate collar, a depending arm, H, which extends along one side of the ink-well, passes through an opening in the base A, and has at its lower end a hook or eye, in which is fitted a key, pin, or wedge, J, which, tightening against the under side of the base, causes the arm to be firmly connected with the base and clamp the ink-well to said base. Projecting from the arm H, just above the lugs G, are
lips K, which extend outwardly over the journals a of the elbow-lever D, thus forming the upper bearings for said journals, and-serving to keep the elbow-lever in position and pre Vent its displacement.
I am aware that it is not new to provide an inkstand with a hinged cover which may be raised, and the inkstand thereby opened by a piece connected with said cover and adapted to be depressed by hand in front of the inkwell, wherefore I disclaim such feature.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isr 1. The base A, ink-well B, and sliding cover F, in combination with the arms E, and the weighted elbow-lever D, formed with an upright hand-bearing portion, D, said arms being connected with said sliding cover F and pivoted to said portion D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The ink-well provided witha cover and an operating-lever therefor, in combination with the collar G, the arm H, the base A, and fastening J, said arm having lips K, whereby the ink-well is clamped to the base and the operating-lever of the cover is held in posi tion, substantially as and for the purpose set IOO.
forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me.
ISAAC BROOKE. In presence of- JOHN A. WIEDERSHEIM, A. P. GRANT.
