SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 596,046, dated December 21, 1897.

.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. WOLFE, aciti- .zen of the United States, residing at Roseville, in the county of Muskingum and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use-' ful Improvements in Oil-Cans; I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in oil-cans and it consists in a pivoted lever, combined with an endwise-moving spring-actuated rod which is placed upon the top of the oil-can, and which rod has a turning movement and is provided with means for stopping a vent-hole, and means upon its outer end for closing the spout, all of which will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide an oil-can with means which is located wholly upon its top for simultaneously opening a vent and the spout, whereby the flow of oil from the can is not started until the end of the spout reaches the desired position, and the flow can be instantly out off.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of an oil-can to which my invention is applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
A represents an oil-can of any suitable construction, and which has projecting from its top, close to the handle B, a wire 0, which is soldered to the handle, in order to brace it in position, and which wire serves as a fulcrum upon which the lever D is pivoted. This lever D is curved in such a manner as to project backwardly over the handle,where it is in position to be readily moved by the thumb of the hand holding the can.
Secured tothe top of the can are the two guides F, which merely serve as bearings for the rod G, which extends across the top of the can, and has its rear end to bear against,
or be loosely connected to the lower end of the lever. Also secured to the top of the can is a third guide H, through which the twisted or spiral portion of the rod passes and which guide causes the rod to have a turning move ment as it is forced endwise by the lever and spring. Applied to the rod between the two guides G is a spiral spring I, which serves to return the rod and the lever instantly to position when they are left free to move. Also secured to the rod at any suitable point is a cover J, which closes a vent in the top of the can for the admission of air. When the rod is moved endwise by the lever, the rod turns about one-half around, and in doing so lifts the cover from the vent-hole and at the same time moves the cover .0 for the end of the spout Q outwardly andupwardly from the mouth of the spout, leaving the air free to enter the vent and the oilto flow from the spout at the same time. The cover 0 is made cupshaped and contains a piece of rubber, cork, or other material, which serves to close the mouth of the spout, so that no leakage can take place even if the can should be upset.
As will be seen, the operating parts consist merely of a lever pivoted upon the handle and an endwise-moving partially-rotating springactuated rod carrying two small covers and a spring, and that these parts are located entirely upon the top of the can, where they can be readily got at for purposes of repair should they ever become injured.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- A can provided with a handle, a support attached to the handle, a lever pivoted upon the support, .and a spring-actuated endwisemoving and partially-rotating rod placed upon the top of the can, and which rod is formed into or provided with a spiral at a point between its ends, combined with a suitable guide 72, upon the top of the can, through which the spiral passes for the purpose of causing the rod to partially rotate, an arm projecting from the rod, and carrying a cover to close the vent, suitable guides attached to the can for retaining the rod in position, and a cover upon the outer end of the rod for closing the spout, substantially as specified.
