UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WINFIELD S. RIOKER AND ROBERT H. M. BARKER, OF OAMBRIDGEPORT,
. MASSACHUSETTS.
OIL-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,052, datedFebruary 22, 1881. Application filed August 5, 1880. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WINEIELD SBIOKER and ROBERT H. M. BARKER, of Cambridgeport, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oil-Cans, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to provide stops for oil-can spouts and allow for inlet of air when oil is poured from the can 5 and. the invention consists in a spring finger-lever provided with disks covering the neck and spout of the can, and fitted so that they may be simultaneously opened by pressing the lever, to permit of the oil being poured out and to admit air into the can, the lever being also adapted to be moved aside to open the neck for filling.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partially in section, of an oil-can fit ted with our improved devices, and Fig. 2 is a top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail View, showing the connection of the leverto the handle of the can.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the can, which may be of any usual shape, and provided with spout a, neckf, and handle I).
B is the finger-lever, attached loya knucklejointed stud, c, to handle I), which connection permits the lever to move in a vertical plane. The lever B is formed or provided with disks (Z c, for covering the neck f and spout a, respectively, the lever being shaped so that the disks rest simultaneously on both. The under sides of disks cl 6 are fitted with disks of leather, cork, or other suitable material, to form a tight stop.
To the lever B is attached a spring, g, which is also connected to the can in any suitable place, and tends to draw the lever down and press the disks cl 0 tightly upon the neck and spout.
The lever B is attached to the stud c by a pin projecting from the stud riveted in an aperture of the lever, and the stud is attached to handle 0 in the same manner. One pin is to be loosely riveted, so that the lever can be turned aside and the neck-opening thus exposed for filling the can with oil. Spring 9 will be fitted so as to be disconnected at will, to allow this side movement of the lever. By this construction the neck and spout are securely stopped when the can is not in use. To pour oil from the spout the outer end of lever B is to be pressed down at the same time the handle is grasped, and held while the oil is being poured. This movement raises disk 0, thereby permitting free escape of oil, and at the same time disk 61 is lifted from the opening in neck f sufficiently to admit air to the can.
This device is simple, convenient, and reliable, and may be applied to any can.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with an oil can, of spring-lever B, provided with disks d c, covering the neck and spout of the can, substantially as shown and described.
2. The lever B, provided with covering-disks d c, and spring g, combined with an oil-can, to which the lever is hinged by a jointed stud, c, that permits movement of the lever in both directions, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
