To all whom itmag concern} Be it known that LDAvIoMoReAN, a citi- .zen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of? WVisconsin, have invented certain new and -useful Improvements in Pencil-Boxes, ofv I top of thebox and forms an ear which is which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pencil boxes such as are commonly used by school children, and the object of the invention is: the provision of a pencil box, which is designed to be permanently attached to the school desk and which embodies novel fea-} tures of construction whereby the same can, be readily moved into either an open or a;
closed position as may be desired.
The invention further contemplates a pen-"i cil box which is simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be readily ap-g plied to a school desk of the usual design, and which will form a convenient receptacle for pencils, pens, and other small article's.
With these and other objects'in view, the
invention consists in certain combinations moved into a closed position, and in dotted lines as swung outwardly into an open position, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1. designates the upper portion of a school desk which may be of any suitable type, the top of the said desk being shown as extending beyond the ends thereof at2. The pencil box 3 is pivotally mounted upon the lower face of the projecting end 2 of the desk top so as to be readily moved either into an open or a closed position.

I gated formation as indicat'edlfupon the drawing, and one end thereof has an angle of the box while the other arm oftheangle strip projects outwardly therefrom at the pivotally connected to the projecting portion 2 of the desk top in any suitable manner as by'means of the screw 5. The box is I designed to be swung about this screw 5 as a center andmay either be moved inwardly against the end of the desk, as indicated in full lines in Fig. 2 so that the box is closed by the projecting portion 2 of the desktop, or swung outwardly, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, so that ready access may be had to the interior of the box for placing pencils therein or removing them therefrom.
When the box is swung inwardly 1 into a closed position, the swinging end thereof is received within an angular or Z-shaped bracket 6 which is pendent from the desk top. The lower end of this bracket is formed with a horizontal arm 6 which extends under the pencil box so as to form a support for the same, while the upper end of the bracket is shown as formed with a plate 6 which is secured to the desk top by some suitable fasteningmembers such as the screws 7 The swinging end of the pencil box is connected to the extremity of the horizontal arm 6 by means of a pair of links 8 and 9 which arepivotally connected to each other. The outer link 9 is pivotallyconnected to the pencil box 3, while the inner link 8 is pivotally "connected to the horizontal arm 6 and a'stop 10 projects from the'bottom of the pencil box for engagement with the outer link 9, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, to limit the outward movement of the pencil box and prevent the two links 8 and 9 from being brought into alinement with each other so as to produce a dead center. angle is always maintained between the two It will thus be obvious that a slight links 8 and 9 and that the pencil box canv be quickly moved into a closed position without the necessity of first breaking a dead center such as would be produced if the two links were .permitted to be brought into alinement with. each other. position by merely grasping the same and moving it as desired and that when in a closed position, it is disposed entirely under the projecting end 2 of the desk top so as to be out of the way and protected from injury.
While I have described the pencil box as applied to the top'of a school desk, it will be readily apparent that it can with equal facility be mounted upon. the lower face of an overhanging support of any suitable character.
Having thus described the invention what I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a device of the character described the combination of an overhanging support, a box open at the top thereof and arranged under the overhanging support so as to be normally closed thereby, said box being located adjacent the free edge of the overhanging support and substantially parallel thereto, means for pivoting one end of the box to the lower face of the overhanging support so that when the box is swung outwardly' away from the overhanging support it will be uncovered to admit of access being-readily had to the interior thereof, a Z shaped bracket having one arm thereof secured to the lower face of the overhanging support and projecting downwardly therefrom, the other end of the bracket extending under the free end of the box so as to prevent sagging thereof when the box is swung inwardly 1nto a closed positlon, a pair of pivoted link members connecting the lower arm of the Z shaped bracket to the bottom of the box to limit the outward swinging movement of the box and provide a support for the same when it is swung outwardly and a stop pin projecting from the box and serving the double function of engaging one of the link members to prevent the two link inembers from being swung into alinement when the box is moved outwardly and also to engage the lower arm of the Z shaped bracket to limitthe inward swinging movement of the box when it is swung under the overhanging support.
