SHOW-CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,366, dated June 12, 1883. Application filed September 13,1882. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. FAWKES, of Storm Lake, Buena Vista county, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Show-Case; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the same.

In the accompanying drawings, which make a part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation with one side of the casing removed; Fig. 2, a plan view of the top of the case, the internal parts being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is an end elevation, partly in section; Fig. 4, a detail showing the adjustable governors.

This invention relates to improvements in show-cases; and the novel points consist in providing a show-case with a cover having an opening in which is a sliding supplemental cover automatically closed by a spring, and beneath the same a revolving and verticallyadjust-able shelf, all adapted to display the goods on the shelf and permit their removal, when desired, as will be now more fully set out and explained.

In the drawings, A denotes any ordinary show-case having glass in the top and front. Inside this the horizontal platforms or shelves B (one or more) are each mounted on a vertical shaft, 0, placed in suitable bearings in the top and bottom of the case. The

shelves are adjustably fixed on the shafts by set-screws n. The shaft 0 is driven by means ,of cord E on pulley c, and the spring mech-,

anism F F, .to which said cord is suitably con nected. This gear can be so constructed as to have any desired driving-power, and the speed may be regulated by the governor-fans g on the shaft a, connecting with said mechanism, by merely moving each out or in its stem b. Each one may be secured by set-screws d. The said driving mechanism is set in aframework, F, which is secured to the bottom of the case by ,bolts in oblong slots 19. It can be moved as desired to regulate the tension of the driving-cord. In the frame H, at the end of the handle G, is a glass, preferably colored. The frame H and its glass constitute a cover for the opening I in the top of the show-case. The frame H is supported upon the frame I so as to be capable of sliding back and forth in the top of the case. WVhen said frame H is drawn back in the position shown at the right-hand side of Fig. 2, the opening I in the frame I and top of the case will be uncovered, and the articles placed on the revolving shelves B will be easily reached. The frame H can be operated by placing the hand directly upon it, or by turning down the side it of the case, the handle of said frame being connected to the upper edge of said side by the cord X, which passes over the pulley K. The frame II will be automatically retracted by means of the spring which is secured to the frame I at S, and handle G at 1', or in any'desired way. When the door is closed, the lock or latch will serve to secure it.

In various ways the mere details of this con= struction so above described may be changed without departing from the scope and interestof the present.

Having now described my invention, what I consider new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is r 1. In a show-case, the combination of a revolving shelf or platform with a cover or top having an opening, and a sliding cover over said opening and above said shelf, substantially as described.

2. A. show-case having an opening in its top, and a sliding cover having a spring for automatically closing the same, combined with a horizontally-revolving and vertically-adjustable shelf for the display of goods, substantially as described.
