Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 14, 1908.
Application led October 30, 1906. Serial No. 341,333.
T o all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, GUsTAv RANGE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Bronx, New York city, New York, have invented an Improvement in Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combination cabinet and table adapted to contain a sewing machine, typewriter, music-box, phonograph or other instrument or apparatus which is normally contained within the cabinet and which by suitable means may be raised to a working position above and outside of the cabinet and which also may be as readily returned to its position within the cabinet. The construction of the cabinet according' to my present invention being an improvement on the cabinet structure shown and described in Letters Patent N o. 349,176, granted to me September 14, 1886.
In carrying out my present invention, I employ a cabinet case comprising corner posts, a top, bottom, front and rear and side members, a platforni conforming in outline and extent with an opening in the top member of the cabinet and adapted to support a sewing machine or other device to be coI1- taine within the cabinet, slide ways in which the said platform may be raised and lowered, drop leaves hinged to the top member of the cabinet, means for raising the platform by and simultaneously with the raising of one of the drop leaves, a trap door forming a part of the bottom of the cabinet, means for raising the said door simultaneously with the raising of the platform to give access to the treadle for the feet, a removable and reversible top piece also adapted to iit the opening in the top member of the cabinet and means for raising one end of the removable reversible top piece in order that the same may be readily removed to make place for the latform when raised and devices which w en the machine and its platform are raised simultaneously su port the same and the drop leaves, as will e hereinafter more particularly described.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved cabinet, Fig. 2 is a plan of 'the same, Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation showing the removable platform and the device supported thereby in a raised position, Fig. 4 1s a plan of the drawer fitting into and forming part of the top member of the cabinet, Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the drawer shown in plan in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a plan of the removable top piece, Fig. 7 is a sectional elevation taken at right angles to that shown in Fig. 1 or Fig. 3, Fig. 8 is a sectional elevation illustrating the means employed for raising one end of the removable top, Fig. 9 is an elevation of a modification of a part of my invention and Fig. 10 is a cross section of the same at the dotted. lines m, of Fig. 9.
In carrying out my invention as1hereinbefore stated, I employ a casing comprising corner posts a each of which at its lower eX- tremity terminates in a suitable leg or su port 2, the top member b, the bottom c, t e front member comprising doors d d1 preferably mounted to swing on the hinges 3 and to be locked by a latch 4 or otherwise, the rear member e in which a door 5 is provided and the side members f.
The bottom member c is preferably provided with a trap door g arranged to swing on hinges 6 and centrally thereof the top member is provided with an opening 7 which is preferably rectangular.
hvdesignates a removable reversible top piece adapted to fit within the opening 7 in the top member b. This top piece h is provided in one edge with a set of pins 8 to be received in recesses 9 in the top member b to support one side of the removable piece 7L which at the opposite end is maintained in position within the opening 7 by suitable supports 10 or otherwise. One side of the removable piece h may be plain and iinished 'similarly to the top member b so that when this side is uppermost the removable piece 71, forms a part of the top member b while the opposite side of the removable member 71. may be rovided with a checker or other board indicated at h1 Fig. 6, so that when revesed it still forms part of the top member In order that this reversible piece h' may be readily removed from the top member b, I prefer to employ a lift fi provided with a longitudinal slot 11 through which the pin or screw 12 passes and by which latter the lift is secured to the inner side of one of the side members f. 4 The lift i is also provided with a hook 13 to which one end of a cord or small chain 14 is secured. The cord 14 is passed through the transverse opening 15tand side member f, and a ring 16 or other device is attached to the opposite end thereof. The upper end of the lift i is out-turned sufficiently to come beneath the edge of the re-` versible member h and it will be apparent that by pulling the cord 14 through the open ing 15 the lift i will be raised and by so doing the end of the reversible member h above the lift i will also be raised from the opening 7 in the top member b sufficiently to be readily grasped by the hand.
The top member b preferably at the opposite sides thereof is provided with drop leaves k cl secured to the said top member by hinges 17 18 respectively.
Z Z1 designate supports pivotally secured beneath the top member b on pins 19 2O respectively and adapted to maintain the said drop leaves lc k1 in their respective raised po sitions.
The top member b at the rear thereof may be provided with a compartment rmdivided by suitable partitions into any number of desired sections and closed by a cover ml connected to the top member b by hinges 21, the cover m1 forming a part of the said tov member; and in front the top member I may be provided with. a removable drawer comprising a bottom n and a cover nl connected thereto by hinges 22. The drawer bottom n may be provided with compartments to receive various articles and the cover n1 is provided with tongues 23 on the opposite edges thereof adapted to fit into and slide within grooves in the edges of the opening formedv in the top member b to receive the said drawer, the cover "el when in place forming part of the top member b and the drawer bottomn being ield in position on suitable supports 24.
In order to of the cabinet from the top the entire top member including the dro leaves 7c k1, the cover 'ml and the remova le drawer in the front may be connected to the casing by hinges 25 preferably fixed at the rear of the cabinet and these top members may be secured in position by a lock or latch 26 suitably laced in the front side of the cabinet and the position of this lock 26 is preferably such that to gain access thereto it is necessary to remove the drawer comprising the drawer bottom n and the cover nl.
o' designates a latform adapted to support a sewing mac ine indicated at o1, or any other deviceor apparatus desired to be contained within the cabinet.
Between the corner posts a and preferably at the rear of the cabinet, I provide horizontal cross pieces 27 28 between which inclined slide bars 29 provided with slide-ways 3() are secured.
The platform `o is secured to a frame member 31 by means of brackets 32 and the frame member 31 is provided with locks 33 having suitable tongues adapted to pass into the slide-ways 30 in the bars 29 and in and upon which the said frame member 31 and the platform o may be raised from the norfacilitate access to the interior salinesy mal osition within the cabinet to a position in w ich the platform 0 forms a part of the top member b.
In order to effect the raising and lowering of the platform o I prefer to employ a cord or chain p one end of which is secured to a hook 34 or other device attached to the frame member 31 the cord p being passed over a pulley 35 preferably mounted in a block secured to a cross piece 27 passed under a pulley 36 and preferably mounted in the side member and provided at its opposite end with a ring 37.
A hook 38 may be secured to the under side of the drop leaf 7c and the cord p is preferably of such a length that when the ring 37 is passed over the hook 38 the raising of the said drop leaf c will also raise the frame member 31 in the platform o from its normal position within the cabinet to that shown in Fig. 3, in which position the said latform and the device or apparatus carried) thereby are ruzpported by the inner ends of the supports When the cabinet is made to contain a sewing machine, the door g in the bottom member c is preferably connected with the. frame member 31 by means of a cord or small chain 'r which is secured at one end to the said door g and at the other end it is provided with a ring 39 adapted to pass over a hook 4() fixed in the said frame member 31 so that simultaneously with the raisin of the frame member 31 and the platform o t e said' door g will also be raised.
It is also necessary when the cabinet is to contain a sewing machine, to provide a crossbar 41 in which a fly-wheel t is mounted in such a position as will be in alinement with a drive-wheel t1 of the sewing machine mechanism around both of which a belt 42 passes. Beneath the cabinet when used for this purpose, I provide brackets 43 in and between which the shaft 44 carrying a treadle 45 is journaled; the treadle 45 being connected with the fly-wheel t by a rod 46 as is customary.
It will be understood that when used for other than sewing machine purposes, it will be unnecessary to set the bars 29 at an inclination, the inclination being required for this sewing machine structure in order that the drive-wheel t1 may clear the fly-wheel t in raising and loweringI the sewing machine apparatus, and an object, other than hereinbefore mentioned, of making the drawer comprising the bottom n and cover nl removable is to enable the operator in running the machine to assume a position nearer the work than would otherwise be possible.
Instead of making the drawer comprising the bottom n and cover nl as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4, 5 and 7, with the hinges 22 on the outside and with slide-ways for the tongues 23, I may prefer according to the modified form of my invention shown in Figs. 9 and lO, to construct this drawer with a body portion n longer than the cover nl and to provide a slide-way therefor between the under surfacev of the top member and the supports 24 and to place the hinges 22 on the lnside concealed between the drawer and table, as in Fig. l0. In this event the drawer can be opened to reach the contents by pulling the same forward slightly and then raising the cover instead of having to remove the same as is the case with the drawer shown in the other figures.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a cabinet adapted to contain a sewing machine or other device and in combination, a casing, a top provided with an opening, a movable platform adapted when raised to iit within the said opening and upon which the sewing machine or other device is supported, a drop-leaf hinged to the said top, a, door in the bottom of the casing closing access to the treadle, and means actuated by raising and lowering the drop leaf for simultaneously raising and lowering the said latform and door.
