Description

April 23, 1957 R. L. RISING COIN BOX-BILLF'OLD Filed Deb. 2a, 1953 nvwzzvrozm RACHEL L. RISING BY 121w.
2,789,612 COIN BOX-BILLFOLD Rachel L. Rising, Los Angeles, Calif. Application December 28, 1953, Serial No. 400,692 3 Claims. (Cl. 150-35) Generally speaking, the present invention relates to a combined billfold and purse and more particularly, to a combined foldable wallet and coin box-purse having, in addition to a foldable wallet, a box or container sliding in and out of a U frame so as to provide easy access thereinto without the necessity of opening the wallet into its fully elongated position in order to secure coins, pills, or the like, and without having to dig down deep int-o a purse, or the like in the. customary prior art manner.
I am aware of the fact that a number of prior art combined purses and billfolds have been invented and developed heretofore. However, none of these prior art arrangements operate to produce the highly desirable results of the present invention, and they all have disadvantages of one type or another.
For example, all of such prior art combined billfolds and purses known to me expand unevenly resulting in an irregular, unsymmetrical pile when coins, pills, or the like, combined billfold and purse difficult to fasten when folded about a central transverse fold line. Therefore, they are not frequently used under the circumstances set forth hereinabove because of their unsuitability for such use.
All of the prior art combined billfold-purses, which are known to me, are of a type wherein a person cannot easily see the various coins, pills or the like, carried therein, and they cannot easily be moved around in a tightly closed confined region such as is usually found in the purse portion of such a prior art combined billfold-purse. This arrangement is unsatisfactory and undesirable because it does not allow the easy locating of the aforesaid items. It will usually be necessary for the person to first manually unfasten the billfold-purse, then to unfold the billfold-purse into its completely elongated position, then to open the purse portion thereof, then to spread it open as far as its physical limits permit, then to search and extract the item desired, then close the purse portion, then refold the billfold-purse about its central transverse fold line, and finally to refasten the snap or other means, frequently provided to keep the billfold-purse from reopening. This series of operations, which occurs many times during the day, is undesirable, annoying and frustrating. Another major disadvantage of this arrangement is that the unevenly distributed coins, pills and the like, in the purse portion cause a loss of usable space by reason of being bulky and clumsy when carried in a handbag or a pocket.
Generally speaking, the improved billfold-purse of the present invention includes a drawer, box or container slidably mounted in a pocket at the open (non-folded) end of the billfold-purse and capable of being slidably opened without having to unfold the closed billfold-purse into its fully elongated position. Said drawer, container or box holds coins, pills, or the like, in a relatively symmetrically distributed manner and prevents the aforesaid items from piling upon one edge of the purse portion of the billfold-purse and thus creating a bulky region. Also, coin ingress means into said box or container may be provided; said coin ingress means being accessible from the exterior of said pocket for pushing in loose coins received as change.
The present invention may also include travel-limiting means effectively cooperable with respect to said drawer are placed in them, creating a bulky and clumsy "ice and with respect to said billfold-purse to effectively act as a stop to prevent said drawer, container or box from being pulled out completely from said pocket whereby to prevent the drawer, container or box from falling and spilling its contents onto the floor, or other underlying surface.
The present invention may, also, be supplied with manually operable fastening means effectively cooperable with respect to the drawer, container or box for 'selectively, effectively, locking and unlocking said drawer, container or box with respect to said pocket.
From the above description of a basic and several preferred generic forms of the present invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that virtually all of the hereinabove-mentioned disadvantages of prior billfold-purses are virtually entirely eliminated and/ or overcome in and through the use of the present invention.
For example, the billfold-purse of the present invention is small, light, and cheap and portable and portions of the pocket containing the drawer, container or box may, if desired, be made of plastic material, or the like, that is translucent, semi-transparent or opaque, so that if preferred, the contents may be visually inspected from the exterior thereof with a minimum of difficulty because the contents are relatively distributed (or distributable) withit in said drawer.
Furthermore, it is not necessary to go through the here inbefore-mentioned sequence of operations of opening the billfold-purse to remove the contents of the purse portion thereof, and then going through further manual operations of closing said purse portion, folding the billfold-purse, and then snapping it closed with a fastener,
or the like. It is only necessary to open the fastening means and look for the desired item; if it is not there, you simply refasten the fastening means; if the item desired is there, you simply slide out the drawer, container or box and immediately place your'fingers on the desired item. Thus, the device of the present invention provides for immediate positive identification and location of thedesired item contained within the container or box and makes it simple and convenient for all persons utilizing this device.
With the above points in mind, it is an object of the present invention to provide a portable billfold-purse capable of rapid, easy and simple operation, and including a novel drawer adapted for use as a purse with great benefit in time-saving in re the securing of a coin, pill, or the like, from within said purse.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a simple, cheap, small, light, portable, safe, convenient billfold-purse arranged to carry coins, pills, and the like, without creating a bulky or clumsy region within the aforesaid billfold-purse caused by an aggregation of said coins.
Other and allied objects will be apparent to those skilled in the art after a careful perusal, examination and study of the accompanying illustrations, the present specification, and the appended claims.
To facilitate understanding, reference will be made to the hereinbelow-described drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing one form of combined billfold-purse in an unfolded position.
Fig. 2 is an exploded perspective view similar in aspect Fig. 5 is a fragmentary, partial vertical section taken in the direction of the arrows V-V in Fig. 4.
Generally speaking, the foldable wallet and coin box:
aweogeta purse'of' the present invention comprises at least three flexible wall members secured together to form an elongated: pocket and a closely adjacent superimposed short pocket; with said I elongated pocket being provided with longitudinalopening meansadjacentfone'of its long sidev edges to provide. side access thereinto, and-with-said-short pocketbeing'provided with .port means adjacent one-of the and along two end edges '4 and todefine an elongated pocketbetween' thewallmembers 1 and Zhaving alongitndinal'openingmeans comprising the'zipper 6 adjacent the other'longzsideedge 7: to provide side access into said elongated-pocket;

Both thisa elongated pocket-and the first above-mentioned elongated pocket are adapted to receive flat foldable objects (such as paper money, or-the like) therein for storage purposes.
The abovergenerally referred to flexible wall members alsoaincludegtin the specific example illustrated-,an addi-- tional,; virtually rectangular, flexible wall member 10' suitably'connected; asby sewingor the like, to a portion of thew longesideedge Brand to a similar portionof the flexiblewall, 8 along'a line 11 so positioned as to allow access to, the: zipper 6,,and' also connected such as by betweenisaidtwo side' members, and said frame-being mounted within. said short pocket withv said drawer receiving opening aligned with said port means.
In';the specific;exampleillustrated, the drawer-receiving frameis indicated generally at.15- (as best seen in Fig. 2) 1 andfiincludesptwo, sideframe members 16connected at their;rear:-ends by a 'laterally directed rear frame member 17;.- Thelarrangement issuch that the front ends'of the sideframesmembers 16- effectively define a drawer-receivingeopening, indicated generally. at 18, therebetween (as best seeninz Fig. 2.). The frame is adaptedto be moved from the position shown in Fig. 2 into the position shownirrFig. 1 by insertingsaid frame 15 through the port 14 into the short pocket 13. and suitablymounting it therein (such as by mechanical fastening means, or the like). I
The present invention also includes a drawer-defining a storage region therein, said drawer being slidably cooperable-within'theframe'and within the short pocket for manual'inse rtion thereinto and for manual extension outwardly therefrom.
In thesspecifici example-illustrated,- one, such drawer is indicated generallyat- 19 and includes the customary four edgg-gwallssm; inupstandiug relationship with respect to In the'specific example illustrated, saidfiexi'bleiawallamembers also include-an auxiliary-rectangular wallgmember S'aIsofastened at-the edges 3, 4 and 5- adapted to be moved from the position shown in Fig. 2 into the position shown in Fig. 1 by inserting the rear end of the drawer 19 through the port 14 into the short pocket 13 and the drawe'r receiviiig opening 18 between the frame members.'16 forislidable cooperation therewith. In this connection, itshouldbe noted that the drawer 19 is shown inuf ully'insertedrelation in Fig. 1 and is shown the customary flat bottom'wall 21, thus defining-a storage region 22.. In the.,exampleillustrated,,a finger'tab 23, ,to facilitate extension of the drawer 19 with respect to the short. pocket 13, is also included. The drawer 19 is in partially extendedlrelation in Fig. .3.
Also, generally speaking, the device of the present invention may include travel-limiting means effectively cooperable with respect' to the-slidablymovable drawer and eif'ectively cooperable-with-the remainder of the wallet to limitthe withdrawal of the-drawer from the short pocketto an extent so as to preventcomplete disengagement thereof.
In the specific.example-illustrated, (as best shown in Fig. 2) thetravel-limitingmeansis indicated generally at 24 and takes theformof the flexible link 25 fastened at one end to' the drawer 19, and adapted'tobe fastened at its other end with: respect to'the rear'portions ofthe interior of the short pocket-13 (or to other portions of the wallet) thus-comprising-means adapted to limit the travel. of the drawer 19' during extension thereof in a manner such as-is indicated'in-Fig. 3 whereby the drawer 19 will not become completely disengaged from the frame 15 and will, therefore; not spill the contents of said drawer onto: an underlying floor or'the like.
The .presentinvention may-also be provided with manually operable"-fasteningfmeans effectively cooperable with respect to the drawer for selectively locking said drawer in fullyinserted relationship within the short pocket and forselectively unlockingsaid drawer for extension thereof with: respect to said "short pocket.
In the specific example illustrated, the fastening means takes theform of'a'fiexible tab- 26 carried by the end edge 5 and'provided with a snap fastener element 27 adapted to cooperate with a similar snap fastener element 27' carriedby the-flexible wall member 1 closely adjacent to'the opposite end edge 4. In other words, the tab 26 is adapted to fold over and around said opposite end edge 4 to cooperate with said second mentioned snap fastener element 27 positioned on the back side of the wall member 1 just behind the end edge 4, and best seen in broken lines in Fig.2.
Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate a slightly modified form of the present invention wherein the drawer 19' is provided with coin ingress-means, indicated generally at 28, and includmg a'slot 29 in the'frontedge wall 20 of the drawer 19' andspring means 30 positioned inside the drawer in cooperativerelationship with respect to theslot 29 whereby to allow ingress of coins but to prevent egress of coins with respect-to the slot 29.- Itwill be understood that, in this forrnof'the invention, theslot 29 will be accessible from the end 4-of the wallet when it is in folded position adjacent the other end'S, by-merely unfastening the tab 26 (shown in 'Figs; 1, 2 and 3) so as to effectively uncover the slot 29 In certain forms of the present invention, at least certain portions of the short pocket 13 (usually, portions of the wall member 10) may be semi-transparent or transparent so as to make visual inspection of the'contents'of the drawer 19 possible from the exterior of the pocket 13 priorto extension of the drawer 19 therefrom. This is indicatedin Fig l by the reference numeral 31 which lies in the area directly over the storage region in the drawer 19.
Numerous modifications and variations of the present invention will occur to those skilled in the art after a careful study hereof. All 'suchproperly within the basic spirit, scope a'nd teachings of the present invention are intended to be included and comprehendedherein asfully as ifspecifically described, illustrated and claimed-herein.
For example, it,.should .be noted that the wallrmeme wall member can be afiixed directly to the wall member 2. It should also be noted that the zipper closure means can be eliminated, if desired. Additional pockets, either long or short, may be incorporated, if desired. The travel-limiting means can be modified substantially or, in certain cases, eliminated entirelythis is also true of the fastening means.
The drawer-receiving frame can also be modified substantially within the spirit of the present invention. The coin ingress means can be modified substantially or differently located with respect to the drawer. It should also be noted that the position of the drawer may be inverted, if desired, so that the adjacent wall forming part of the elongated pocket will actually act as a cover for the storage region within the drawer, thereby making it possible to eliminate the wall 10 and merely retain the drawer by means of the frame.
The exact compositions, configurations, constructions, relative positionings, and cooperative relationships of the various component parts of the present invention are not critical, and can be modified substantially within the spirit of the present invention.
The embodiments of the present invention specifically described and illustrated herein are exemplary only, and are not intended to limit the scope of the present invention, which is to be interpreted in the light of the prior art and the appended claims only, with due consideration for the doctrine of equivalents.
