16 Claims. (Cl. 299-107) This invention relates to a jet ring and particularly to a jet ring for delivering a high pressure film of liquid toward the axis of the ring from all points around the axis.
There are many machines and industrial installations which require a high pressure application of water to a central point. For example, in the descaling of rods and bars it is the practice to pass a heated rod or bar through between spray nozzles which spray cold water onto the bar to break up scale thereon and wash it away from the rod or bar. The spray produced by ordinary spray nozzles is very wasteful of the spray liquid since a large amount of the liquid. by-passes the article being sprayed. As a necessary corollary, an excessive amount of spray liquid must be handled both before the spray and after the spray. This means larger pumps, lines and sumps than would be necessary in a more efficient liquid delivery system.
I have invented a jet ring which overcomes these defects of the prior art spray systems and which is capable of delivering a very thin stream of liquid, all of which is used in descaling and all of which impinges on the article being treated. l will describe my invention as applied to a descaling operation in which a bar is heated and passed through a descaling spray of liquid.
I provide a jet ring having a pair of annular members forming a chamber between them, a line or narrow band contact between said members, holding means holding said annular members together resiliently at the Contact zone, directional means on one of said members adjacent the contact zone directing liquid from the contact zone toward the axis of the annular members and means delivering high pressure liquid to the channel between the annular members. Preferably the annular members are circular in shape. One of said members is preferably provided with an annular groove in one face thereof and the other member is provided with a corresponding mating annular recess, each member is preferably provided with a hardened facing forming a line contact between the two members adjacent their axially facing edges. One of the facings is preferably in the form of a curved deecting or directing face or directional means. The other face is preferably in the form of a V-shaped annular ridge, the bottom of which forms the line contact with the directing face, The two annular members are preferably held together by spaced bolts under equal tension. The high pressure liquid is introduced into the chamber formed by the mating groove and recess in the two members and causes sumcient distortion of the members to permit uid to spray out through the line contact toward the axis of the members. In this preferred form the operation depends upon the inherent resilience of the metal in the members to permit separation at the line contact between the members.
I have described certain salient features, advantages and objects of my invention in the foregoing general description, however other features, objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the following description and the accompanying drawings in which:

Referring to the drawings, l have illustrated a jet ring made up of two annular members 10 and 11. One of these members 10 is provided with an annular groove 12 in one face thereof. The other member 11 is provided with a mating annular recess 13 which forms with the groove 12 an annular chamber between the members 10 and 11. The member 1) carrying the groove 12 is provided with a hardened curved face 14 beginning at the groove 12 and extending to its inner peripheral edge. This curved face acts as a deflecting means as will be hereinafter more fully described. The other member 11 is provided with a projecting annular U-shaped hardened ridge l5 which forms a line contact with the curved face i4 of the member 10. Preferably the member 11 is provided with a second recess 13a and U-shaped ridge 15a on the side opposite the recess i3 and ridge 15 so that it is reversible in case of wear on the ridge 15. The two members 19 and 1l are held together by bolts 16 which pass through both members and are provided with short spacers 17 on the outside of one member of the pair. A rubber O-ring gasket I8 is fitted in a groove 19 between the two members adjacent the mating groove and recess to prevent leakage of liquid. A passage 20 is provided between the members connecting the groove 12 with a source of high pressure liquid 21.
In operation the bar being descaled or other member being treated is passed through the annular opening in the annular members. High pressure liquid is brought in through line 2i to passage 20 and into the chamber formed by the groove 12 and recess 13. As the pressure builds up in the chamber the two members distort slightly along the line contact between the curved face 14 and the ridge 15 permitting `a thin sheet or lm of water to jet outwardly toward the axis of annular members and to impinge upon the member being treated, in this case, the bar being descaled. The distortion is regulated by the tightness of the bolts lo so that the pressure required to be built up before the spray begins and the pressure of the jet spray may be regulated.
In Figures 3 and 4,-1 have illustrated a second embodiment of my invention. In this embodiment, I provide a pair of annular ring members 30 and 31. One of the members 3b is provided with an inwardly extending ange 32 having a ridge portion 33 thereon. The other ring 31 is iitted over the ring 3@ and is provided with a recessed portion 34 forming a` chamber with the flange 32 of the member 30. A conical face 35 adjacent the recessed portion 34 makes line contact with the ridge portion 33 and acts as a directional means for the jet of liquid issuing from the line contact as will hereafter be more fully described. An annular clamp member 36 is fitted against the two members 30 and 31 and is held in place by spaced bolts 37 passing through it and the member 30. Each of the bolts is provided with a collar 38 which adds compressive resilience to the structure. The clamp member is provided with a groove 39 passing over the interface between the members 30 and 3l so that any irregularities in the members will not aiect its clamping effect on the two members. High pressure liquid is introduced into the chamber formed by the two members 36 and 31 through a pipe et) and a passage 4l. Leakage between the members isY prevented by a rubber O-ring 42 in a groove 43 between'the members 30 and 31. i
The operation of this second embodiment isessentially the same as that of the embodiment of Figures 1 and 2. High pressure liquid is introduced into the chamber' formed between the members 30 and 31 from the inlet pipe 40 and passage 41. When sufficient pressure has built up there will be some compression of the collars 38 and some distortion of the members 30, 3l and 36. This permits a slight'break at the line contact between the ridge 33 and face 35 (about v2.5 thousandths Yof an inch) through which the liquid passes as a radially inwardly directed thin iilm or sheet. The pressure at which this occurs is regulated by the tension on bolts 37.
In both embodiments, I provide mounting cap screws 570 around the outer periphery of one of the members to permit Yfixing the unit in a spray cabinet or other device.
While I have illustrated and described certain preferred embodiments of my invention it will be understo-od that itmay be otherwise embodied within the scope of the following claims.

A jet ring for delivering a high pressure film of liquid to a central point comprising a pair of annular members, a groove in one of said members, a curved deiiecting face beginning at said groove and extending angularly inwardly toward the axis of the member, a mating recess in the other member forming a chamber with the groove, a V-shaped ridge on the said other member adjacent the recess and forming line contact with the curved deflecting face closing the chamber, holding means spaced from the line Contact holding said annular members resiliently together, and means for introducing a high pressure liquid into the chamber between the members whereby the annular members are caused to iiex apart under pressure to form an annular nozzle.
5. A jet ring as claimed in claim 5 wherein the curved face and V-shaped ridge are made of hardened abrasion resisting material.
6. A jet ring for delivering a high pressure sheet of liquid to a 'central point comprising a pair of annular members, a chamber between said members, line contact between said members along one side of the chamber, i
spaced bolts passing through the annular members and spaced from the line contact holding said Vannular members resiliently together, and means` for introducing a liquid at high pressure into the chamber between the members whereby the annular members are caused to Hex apart under pressure to form an annular nozzle.

3. A jet ring as claimed in claim 5 wherein the holding means is a plurality of spacedbolts carrying collar members whereby the amount of tension on the members may be varied.

A jet ring for delivering a high pressure sheet of liquid to la central point comprising a pair ofannular members, a chamber between said members, line contact between said members :along one side of the chamber, the Contact surface of one member forming a truncated icone, holding means spaced from the line contact holding said annular members resiliently together, and means for introducing :a liquid at high pressure into the chamber between the members whereby the annular members are caused to flex apart under pressure to form an annular nozzle. A jet ring for delivering a high pressure sheet of liquid to a central point comprising a pair of annular members, a chamber between said members, cont-act between said members along one side of the chamber, a truncated conical surface on one member adjacent the annulus thereof, a V-shaped ridge on the other member in line contact with the conical surface holding means spaced from the annular openings in the members holding said annular members resiliently together, and means for introducing a liquid at high pressure into the chamber between `the members, whereby the annular members are caused to flex apart under pressure to form :an annular nozzle.

A jet ring for delivering a high pressure sheet of liquid to a central point comprising a pair of annular members, achamber between said members, line contact between said members along one side of the chamber, an annular clamp ring engaging 4the two members, holding means spaced from the line contact holding said clamp ring and the annular members resiliently together, and means for introducing a high pressure liquid into the chamber between the members whereby the vannular members are caused to iiex yapart under pressure to form an annular nozzle.

A jet ring for delivering a high pressure sheet of liquid to a central point ycomprising a lpair of `annular members, a cham-ber between said members, line contact between said members lalong ione side of the chamber, the contact surface of one member forming a trun cated cone, an annular clamp ring engaging the two members, holding means spaced from the line contact holding said clamp ring and the annular members resiliently together, and means for introducing a high pressure liquid into the chamber between the members Awhereby the annular members are caused to flex apart under pressure to form an annular nozzle.

A jet ring for delivering a high pressure sheet of liquid to a central point comprising a pair of annular members, a chamber between said members, line contact between said members along one side of the chamber, the contact surface of one member forming a truncated cone, Ithe contact of the other member being a V-shaped ridge to form line contact, an annular clamp ring engaging the two members, holding means spaced from the line contact holding said clamp ring and the annular members resiliently together, and means for introducing a high pressure Vliquid into the chamber between the members whereby the annular members are caused to flex apart under pressure to form an annular nozzle.

A jet ring for delivering a high pressure sheet of liquid to 'a central point comprising a pair of annular members, a chamber between said members, line Contact between said members along one side of the chamber, an annular clamp ring engaging the two members, spaced bolts passing through the clamp ring and annular members 'and spaced from the line Contact holding said clamp ring and the annular members resiliently together, and means for introducing a high pressure liquid into the chamber `between the members whereby the annular members and spacedv from the line contact holding said clamp ring and the annular members resiliently together, and means for introducing a high pressure liquid into the chamber between the members whereby the annular members are caused to flex apart under pressure to form an annular nozzle.
