Abstract
An apparatus for providing a continuous high intensity uniform quench to a hot flat metal plate 38 Fig.1 comprises feedrolls 10, 12, 14 and 16, disc rollers 44, 46, 52, 54, 60 and 62 for preventing distortion of the plate, rollers 44 and 46 being spaced as far as possible from rolls 12 and 16 consistent with maintaining flatness of the plate, parallel quenching tubes 18 and 20 having closely spaced longitudinally aligned holes therein through which the quenching liquid (e. g. water) escapes under pressure to be deflected in the direction of travel of the plate by curved deflectors 32 and 34, so set that the quench curtain strikes the plate at a minimum distance from entry rolls 12 and 16 and further quenching stations 66, 68, 70 and 72 for maintaining the original quench. The separate pairs of rollers are opposite each other perpendicularly across the plate as are the discs on the disc rollers. The discs are staggered across the line of travel of plate on the three sets of disc rollers. The quench spray curtain preferably strikes the plate at an angle of 10 degrees to 40 degrees.
