Abstract

1405123 Quenching apparatus DREVER CO 20 Sept 1972 [22 Sept 1971 1 June 1972] 43560/72 Heading C7N Apparatus for quenching continuous metal plate 30 comprises quench headers 18, 20 delivering a curtain of water 62 from slots 92 at an angle of 10 degrees-40 degrees to the plate, and pairs of spirally-grooved rollers 22, 24 and 36, 38. Additional quench spray pipes 32, 34 are positioned between the rollers to maintain the cooling of the plate. In another embodiment, Fig.6 (not shown), the rollers consist of interrupted spiral segments. The headers 18, 20 comprise a back plate 90 and a gate member 88 adjustable relative to the back plate to vary the width of the slot 92. Fig. 1 (not shown) shows three pairs of spiral rollers and two pairs of additional spray pipes. The grooves on each roller extend in opposite directions from the centre 76 of the roller so as to direct water towards the outer longitudinal edges of the plate and, preferably, the grooves are formed by walls 74 whose opposite faces 82 and 84 diverge in an inward direction towards the roller axis as shown in Fig.4.
