RUFUS -WRIGHT, OF AKRON, OHIO.
DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,820, dated May 15, 1883,
Application filed October 19, 1882. (No model.)
Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Door-Checks, (which has notbeen patented to myself, nor to others, with my knowledge and consent, in any foreign country, and which, according to my knowledge and belief, has not been in public usein the United States for more than two years prior to this application,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of doorchecks known as pneumatic.
The object of my invention is to produce a simple, cheap, and effectual door-check, andalso to avoid a sudden shock to the door, by providing devices whereby the resistance may he graduated.
My invention consists in the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims. Figure 1 represents in perspective a part of a doorway and door with the door-check attached upon the face of the lintel; and Fig. 2, a similar view with the door-check attached beneath thelintel, and also exhibiting a device for graduating the resistance of the check.
Upon the front part of the lintel A, Fig. 1, is attached, by a bracket, B, or other suitable means, a small bellows, 0, so placed that when it is closed the door 1) may pass beneath it and rest in the casing; but when it is expanded its lower surface is encountered by the upper edge of the closing door, thereby retarding its momentum until, by gradually closing, it permits the door to enter the casing. To facilitate the closing of the bellows a small ap erture, E, may be made in its lower side.
If desiredfthe bellows may be attached beneath the lintel, as shown in Fig. 2, in which A is the lintel, G the bellows, and D the door, in which case a suitable arm, F, should be attached to and project from the door D to encounter and compress the bellows.
To prevent the sudden stopping of and consequent shock to the door, there can be placed upon the lower side otthe bellows a slat or rib,
Gr, having its under side curved inwardly, arranged to receive the thrust of the door or arm, whereby the angle offered thereto and consequent resistance is at first very slight, but constantly increases until closed.
The bellows may be used in either position, and with or without the rib G, and it may be attached to either the door or the casingwithout departing from my invention.
I claimi. In a door-check, a bellows attached to the lintel of a door-frame, and having its movable leaf arranged to arrest the momentum of the door in coming to a closed position, substantially as described. 2. In a door-check, the bellows O, provided with the rib Gr, curved as shown, and secured to the movable leaf of the bellows, in combination with the arm F, arranged to engage with said rib, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of October, A. D. 1882.
