DOYEL PEARSON, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
" DEVICE FOR CLOSING WlNDOWS AND DOORS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 266,384, dated October 24, 1882.
Application filed March 27, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LDoYEL PEARSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis,
in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful I mprovements in Devices for Closing Windows and Doors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my improvement as applied to a door and a window aud Fig.2 is a detached View, with the case broken away, ot'-the motor.
The purpose of this invention is to effect the closing of a window or door at a stated time, which is greatly desirable, especially in miasmatic climates; and it consists in the adaptation to the closing ofa window or door provided with spring-fastening devices, at a stated or given time, of mechanism substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In carrying out my invention I employ, in connection either with a door or window, mechanism A, similar to that used in a clock for moving its hands, adapted, by connecting it by a cord or chain, B, to the sash or door, to allow the same to be closed at a stated or given time. \Vhen applied to a door a spring, a, suitably at'tixed one end to the frame and the other to the door, is used to enable the latter to draw upon the cord and effect the unwinding of the same, which is timed by a. pendulum or a fly or air wheel. To the front edge of the door is applied a springbolt, 1), which shoots into a beveled nose or catch, 1), secured to the jamb just as the door closes. hen applied to a window the cord or chain B is passed over a pulley or pin, 0, fastened to the top of the window-frame, and then connected to the lowersash. The sash hasaprojection, d, on its lower portion, which, when the sish is closing, forces back the beak otaspringcatch. 0, attached to the wimlow-frame, and permits the catch to spring upon it, and thus fasten the sash as against being clandestinely raised from the outside.
The device is particularly desirable in miasmatic climates to ett'ect the closing of the door or window at a given or specified time to exclude miasma.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a door or window,
of time mechanism constructed and arranged to be operated by the force employed in closing the same, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of adoor or window provided with automatic locking devices with a time mechanism arranged to be operated by the force employed in closing the same, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof l aflix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
