UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY COLE, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
DEVICE FOR EXHIBITING CARDS AND SAMPLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,681, dated May 15, 1883.
Application tiled February 1."), 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY COLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colo rado, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Exhibiting Cards and Samples; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will, enable others skilled in the artto which it am'iertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l ot'the drawings is a representation ofafront view of the exhibitor.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a partial section made on a larger scale. Fig. 4 is a detail of the construction, showing the slats connected to a strip. Fig. 5 is a detail view.
This invention has relation to exhibiting devices for address-cards, signs, samples, advertisements, small wares, &c.; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of de vices, as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter F designates the supporting case or frame in which the working parts of the exhibitor are inclosed. This case should be provided with a glass front or door, Z, and the-case is designed to be ornamented in tasteful manner.
In bearings 13, near the upper end of the case, are seated the journals a of the upper roller, A, which is provided with pulleys L near its ends.
In vertical slot-bearings K, near the lower ends of the case, are arranged thejournals a of the lower roller, A, which is provided near each end with a collar-flange, I).
In bearings B, near the middle of the case, are seated thejournal ends I) ofthe transverse operating-shaft E, one end of which projects through the case-wall on the right-hand side, and is provided with a crank-handle, C. On the shaft E are secured pulleys L, which are vertically under the pulleys L of the upper or hands J.
l G represents the endless slatted apron,
which is suspended, from the upper roller, A, over which it passes, between the pulleys L. In the lower end of the endless apron is slung the lower or weight roller, A, which is al- A lowed by its slot-bearings K to adjustitselfin position, according to the extent ot'the apron, while holding said apron in position, so that its slatted front will be in the vertical plane. The apron is composed of a series of transverse slats, Z, which are secured by headed nails or rivets H to endless bands or strips S, forming an endless apron of transverse slats, providing a series of bearings for the attach ment of address-cards or printed or written slips of such character as may be desired. The heads It of the tacks or nails Hare allowed to project a little above the outer surface of the slats Z, and serve to provide catchbearings whereby the ends of the cards or slips may be connected to the slats, or samples or sample-boxes may be attached. The observer, turning the crank C, can bring all the cards or advertising-slips of the exhibitor opposite his eyes, so that he can readilyscan the subject-matter thereof. No effort is re.- quired in stooping or reaching upward to read the cards or signs. When articles are placed for exhibition in small boxes attached to the slats such boxes should have glass fronts.
Having described this invention, what .I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The device for exhibiting cards and samples, consisting of the casing having the bearings B B and lower slots, K, the upper roller, A, havingthejourualsaand pnlleysL,thelowerroller, A, having end journals, to, engaging the slots and collars I), the driving-shaft having pulleys L and crank C, the driving belts or cords J, and theendless slatted apron G, passing over the upper roller and carrying the lower roller in its lower bend, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereofl affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY COLE. Witnesses:
JOHN COOKE, S. J. JETT.
