POSTERr-IDISPLAY MACHINE;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 191 5.
Application filed March 24, 1913, Serial No. 756,345. Renewed December 24, 1914. Serial No. 878,942.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. HAVENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county of Whiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Poster-Display Machines, of which the following is a specification. n Q
My invention has reference to machines for displaying posters and advertising matter, and it is specially designed for use in connection with moving picture shows. In this class of business it is necessary to change the advertising matter at the front of the show-house daily, and the present means for accomplishing this are quite crude and unsatisfactory.
By the use of my machine it is possible to display a series of pictures or cards in rotation, in such a manner as to attract the attention of the passer-by, and to remove one set of advertising matter and replace it with another conveniently and quickly.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention, with the frame removed, and with a poster in place therein. Fig. 2 is a side view with the side of the receptacle removed. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of the ends of the clamp- plates 17 and 22. Fig. 4 is an inner end view of the sockets 15 and 26, with the clamp-plates shown in I cross-section. Fig. 5 shows the clamp-plates in cross-section, in closed position. Fig. 6 is a similar view thereof, open. Fig. 7 is a detail of the segment gear 38 and pinion 39.
Similar parts are indicated by corresponding reference numbers throughout the several figures.
1 represents a receptacle of suitable proportions, open at one side, and provided at that side with a frame 2, hingeably connected therewith at one of its edges. Within said receptacle are rotatably mounted a pair of rollers 3 and 4, in vertical alinement near the front of the receptacle, said rollers b ing provided at their ends with sprocket-wheels l5 and 6, engaged by a pair of corresponding sprocket-chains 7. Said chains also pass over the ends of a roller 8 journaled in the upper part of the receptacle, and downwardly beneath an idler roller 9, the shaft of which is supported in bearings 10 fixed on rods 11, vertically slidable in perforated brackets 12 and 13 secured to the side of the receptacle. Between the bearings 10 and the brackets 12 is interposed a pair of extensile coiled springs '14, which exert a downward tension on the roller 9, and aid in holding the chains 7 in a taut condition.
Fixed on the inside of the chains 7 at regular intervals are pairs of sockets 15, adapted to hold at their ends clamp- plates 16 and 17, united by hinges 18. Fixed to the clampplate 16 is a plate 19, between which plate and the plate 16 is secured one end of an apron section 20, formed of canvas or other suitable material. The plates 16 and 17 are held normally in clamping position by means of spring metal clips 21, removably seated thereon. The opposite end of the canvas 20 is secured between a clamp-plate 22 and plate 23 fixed thereto, the plate 23 being connected with a similar plate 24 by means of hinges 25. The ends of the plates 22 and 24 are adapted to be loosely held in pairs of sockets 26 fixed on the inside of the chains 7, and are held in closed position by means of spring clips 27. The clamp- plates 17 and 24 have a central flexible connection by means of a spring-rod 28 loosely held at its ends in sleeves 29 fixed to the plate 24 and provided centrally with a plate 30 having a key-hole opening 31 adapted to receive a button 32 on the adjacent plate 17. For convenience in operation the plate 30 is provided with a tab 33. In case the canvas 20 is a little looser on one side than on the other the clamp-plates at the upper end thereof, by reason of the flexible connection just described, readily adjust themselves to such variation, and if necessary one end of such plates is permitted to precede the other end slightly. A slight separation or wider spacmg of the clamp-plates at the upper end of the canvas from those at the lower end of the next adjacent section is also rendered possible. The clamp- plates 16 and 17 are given a semi-rigid connection with the sockets 15 by means of extensions of the pintles of the hinges 18 into spring-rods 34, which are normally held in depressions in the lower faces of the sockets.
In the picture business hereinbefore referred to it is usual to display advertising matter for three picture plays, and my machine is preferably provided with three of the canvas sections 20, although a larger number can be used, if desired. This is made possible by the use of the idler roller 9, which not only assists in keeping the chains so as to accommodate the desired number of sectlons.
35 represents a poster, Which is heldin place by having its upper andlower ends secured e n :t c mp-P e t p from the machineand the clips 21 and 27 removed, permitting the opening of the clamp-plates The. poster sheet Sis then placed therein, the clamp-plates closed, 1 and the clips securedi hereon. Theolovverplatesare --then: slipped into ,the sockets Which into the, sockets 26. The section is then; con;
