DISPLAY-SIGN FOR STORE-WINDOWS.
LldLSMl.
Application filed November 26, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OWEN JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Signs for Store-Windows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in display apparatus for store windows and the object in view is to produce a simple and eificient means of this nature whereby illuminated or other signs may be held within the show windows and make an attractive appearance from without or within.
The invention comprises a simple and efficicnt device of this nature having various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a rear elevation of the apparatus applied to a window. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is an enlarged rear elevation of one unit of the device. Fig. 4: is a sectional view'on line H of Fig. 3. F ig. 5 is a vertical end elevation, and Fig. 6 is an elevation of a modified form of support for the device.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a window frame on the upright rails of which the metallic bars B are fastened, each having parallel fingers C arranged opposite-each other and which are adapted to receive the eyes D upon the frames 15, an enlarged detail view of one of which is shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings, thus serving as a means for supporting the frame transversely across the window openings. Each frame E is provided with a display opening E, shown in section in Fig. 4:, and lugs, designated by letter F, project from the frame upon which the swinging frame H is pivotally mounted through the medium of the pivotal pins I.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 3, 1915.
Serial No. 803,247.
Said frame H is provided preferably with a ground glass K and normally rests in the position shown in the drawings, parallel with opening E.
Clamping fingers, designated by letter O, are fastened to the casing and are adapted to frictionally engage the stencil letter plates Q; which latter engage recesses formed in the casing. Each plate Q is preferably provided with a flange Q, upon one edge adapted to overlap the edge of an adjacent letter plate. The lower portion of said frame E is provided with lugs J, one of which is shown clearly in Fig. 5 of the drawings, and which have notches J formed in their upper ends to receive the pintles P of the pipe P which is adapted to receive the wires R for supplying the current to the lamps R. A concaved reflector T is fastened to said pipeand is adapted to reflect the rays of light upward toward the ground glass which is mounted in the frame H and through which the lightis transmitted to illuminate the display sign or characters.
In Fig. 6 of the drawings, I have shown the frame supporting device slightly modilied and designated by letter S, as having a base S with the fingers C thereon and which modified form is adapted to be fastened to a floor or other place independent of the window frame.
The adjustment of the parts of my invention will be readily understood. The frames E may be adjusted upon the holders upon the opposite sides of the window frame and the sign letter or characters inserted and held by means of the spring plates, the auxiliary frame H being adapted to swing up and, after the sign has been adjusted, swung down to its normal position as shown in the drawings. The pipe carrying the electric wires and the bulbs may be placed with the pintle ends of the pipes resting in the notches P and, by reason of the curved reflector, the rays of light would be thrown up against the ground glass and transmitted through the sign.
What I claim to be new is 1. display device for store windows, etc., comprlsing a frame with an opening there- 1n, stencil plates and means for holding the same adjacent to said opening, a swinging frame with a ground glass plate mounted therein and positioned behind said stencil plates, lamps positioned below the stencil plates, and a reflector for throwing the rays of light from the lamps into the spaceatthe rear of said ground glass, as set forth. a
2. A' display device for store Windows, etc., comprising a frame with an opening therein, stencil plates and means for. holding the same adjacent to said opening, means for a supporting the frame, a pipe and means for supporting the latter below the stencil plates, a curved reflector secured to said frame below the stencil plates, lamps carried by the pipe at right angles to the plane Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the a .Washington, D. above said lamps, as set forth. v
In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my "signature in presence of two Witnesses.
OWEN JAMES.
