TINTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J'. MURPI-IEY AND OLIVER R. BURGESS, OF NEWCASTLE, INDIANA ELECTRIC WINDOW-SIGN.
masias.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM J.
MUnrHnY and OLIYER R. BURC-nass, citizens of the United States, residing at Newcastle, in the county ot Henry and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Electric Window-Sign, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to produce an electric window sign which may be readily mounted upon the inner frame ot' a window and held against the glass in such manner as to display any desired legend to the passer-by.
The accompanying drawings illustrate our invention.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device; Fig. 2 a side elevation showing fragmentary portions oi the window frame and glass; Fig. 3 a rear elevation showing a fragmentary portion of the window frame and glass; Fig. 4 a horizontal section.
In the drawings, 10 indicates a box or receptacle of suitable size and of material acceptable to the Board of Fire Underwriters, said receptacle being in the form of an open faced box suitably ventilated as indicated at 11 and having its open faced frame 12 provided with grooves 13 for the reception ot a legend-bearing card or plate 14 through which the lights may shine. The grooves 13 extend through one or more sides of the box or receptacle 10, as indicated in Fig. 2, to permit the ready insertion and removal of the legend-bearing card or plates 14. Arranged within the receptacle 10 are lamp sockets 15 in any desired number and arrangement and extend ing through the back of the receptacle is an ordinary connection fitting or socket 16.
Pivoted upon the back of receptacle 10, by means ot a bolt 17, is a hinge bracket 1S provided with a pair of perforated ears 19, 19. Bracket 18 may be held in any desired angular position relative to receptacle 10 by the thumb screw 20 which passes through the bracket and into or against the rear wall of the receptacle 10. The receptacle l0 is supported upon a swinging arm conveniently formed of rod or wire into two project-ing arms 22, 22 which are provided with inturned tips 23 adapted to take into the perforated ears 19 of bracket 18, said tips, when so placed, being held in place by any suitable means such, for instance, as a tie wire 32 connecting the two arms 22, 22 near Specification of Letters Patent.

their ends. The supporting arm just described is pivotally supported in the outer ends of the arms 24:, 24. of a U-shaped bracket 25 adapted to be secured by screws or other suitable means 26 to a window or door casing 27, the arrangement being such that the open face oi the receptacle 10 may be held against one face of the window light 281 by means of a spring 29 connected at one end to bracket 25 and at the other end to one of the arms 22.
The structure described may be readily attached to existing window frames or door frames and, by turning the receptacle 10 upon bolt 17, the sign legend displayed by the card 14: may be given any desired position and any desired legendsbearing card may be inserted.
We claim as our invention:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a lamp-carrying receptacle having a legendbearing face, a pivot bracket rotatably mounted on said receptacle so as to support the same to rotate about an axis transverse to the legend-bearing face, a supporting arm hinged in said bracket on an axis at an angle to said 4firstn named axis, and a supporting bracket hinged to said supporting arm and formed for attachment to a suitable support.
2. In a device of the class described, a lamp-carrying receptacle having an open face provided with means for the reception of a legend-bearing card, a bracket pivotally mounted on the rear ol said receptacle, releasable means for holding said bracket and receptacles from relative rotation about their connecting pivot, a supporting arm pivoted upon said bracket substantially at right angles to the pivotal mounting of the bracket, and a supporting bracket pivotally connected with the supporting arm, said supporting bracket being formed for attachnient to a window or door frame.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a lamp-carrying receptacle having a legend-bearing face, a pivot bracket mounted on the opposite side oi said receptacle from said legendbearing j face so as to support the receptacle, a supporting arm hinged in said bracket, and a supporting bracket hinged to said supporting arm on an axis ditierent 'from that of the first mentioned hinge and formed for fp attachment to a suitable support.
4. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a lamp-carrying receptacle having a vertical legendbea'ring face, 'a pivot bracket mounted on said receptacle so as to support the same to rotate about'a horizontal axis transverse to the legendbearing face, a supporting arin hinged in said bracket on a substantially vertical axis. and a supporting bracket hinged to said supporting arin on a different substantially Vertical axis and formed for attachment to a suitable support.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a lamp-carrying receptacle having a vertical legend-bearing face, a pivot bracket mounted on said receptacle so as to Vsupport the saine, a supporting arm hinged in said bracket on a substantially vertical axis, and a supporting bracket hinged to'said supporting arm on a different substantially Vertical axis and formed for 20 `attachment to a suitable support.
