Description

R. E. DE NSQN BARBER SHOP ADVERTISING DISPLAY Aug. 26, 1969 Filed Oct. 23, 1967 I INVENTQR [Fae/Zara! EJenw/z. NEY
United States Patent 3,462,866 BARBER SHOP ADVERTISING DISPLAY Richard E. Denson, 15715 Myrtle Ave., Harvey, Ill. 60426 Filed Oct. 23, 1967, Ser. No. 677,180 Int. Cl. G09f 13/04, 11/02 US. CI. 40-33 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention disclosed in the accompanying drawings is comprised of a support arm upon the free end of which is mounted a light transmitting globular housing which encloses its support journals and drive means as well as a source of illumination.
More specifically, the housing is comprised of an upper segment that is carried on a rotatable shaft that extends from a combination electric motor-gear reduction assembly. The latter is carried firmly on a novel frame which is mounted firmly on a post extension of the support arm. The entire support and drive mechanism is enclosed by the addition of a lower housing segment that has free rotation about the post extension. The light transmitting housing may carry the usual stripe insignia conventional with bar shop displays as well as any other indicia desired.
It is therefore an object of the invention to provide a display device of the character referred to.
Another object is to provide novel means for mounting a rotatable globular housing.
Another object is to provide a novel frame for supporting a rotatable globular housing on a support arm and for mounting the drive mechanism.
Another object is to provide a two-piece globular housing affording access to the interior thereof when servicing is required.
Another object is to provide a device of the character referred to which is not expensive to manufacture and which is very serviceable.
The structure by means of which the above noted objects and advantages of the invention are attained will be described in the following specification, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, showing a preferred illustrative embodiment of the invention, in which:
FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of the display device showing the globular housing partially in section to illustrate the interior construction.
FIG. 2 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on line 22 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the mounting frame.
FIG. 4 is a plan view of the globular housing.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the display device includes a support arm 11 which preferably extends upwardly angularly from a support surface 12 to which it is secured. The free forward end of said arm is tapped to receive firmly thereon a tubular post 13 that projects upwardly substantially vertically. The upper end of said post is externally threaded, as at 14, to receive lock nuts 15 which secure a frame 16 to the post. The frame 16 is fabricated from a wide strap of shape retaining sheet material into substantially the S-shape shown.
Preferably, the frame 16 has its medial arm 16a secured to the post with its lower arm 16b apertured to embrace the post to insure stability. Its upper arm 16c is suitably apertured to receive screws 17 for securing a gear-reduction casing 18 to the under side thereof. This gear-reduction casing carries on its under side an electric motor 19 having its driven shaft connected to the gearing 21 within the casing. This gearing is conventional and is not shown in detail and it carries an output shaft 22 that projects up through an opening in the upper frame arm 16c. A yoke 23 is carried on output shaft 22, it being connected thereto by a friction washer assembly 24 so as to be rotated normally with the shaft. The frame also includes lateral sections 16d each of which mounts a socket 25 for a light bulb 26.
The yoke 23 has connected firmly to its upper end, as by means of screws 27, the upper half 28 of a light transmitting globular housing. This manner of mounting prevents wobble. This housing segment 28, preferably fabricated from plastic material, is flanged on its free edge of its perimeter wall 28a, as at 28b, so as to have a friction fit with a bead 29a on the perimeter wall of a lower housing segment 29 which is also fabricated from light transmitting plastic material. As shown, the lower segment 29 carries a nylon bearing 31 that has free rotation on post 13.
Although the housing, formed by segments 28, 29, is shown substantially flat and non-circular, it may be of greater height and it may be circular if so desired. In any event, it carries surface ornamentation such as the conventional colored stripes 32 used generally to identify a bar shop. Also, other indica, such as the name of the establishment or the like can be carried thereon.
In use, the lamps 26 are illuminated and the motor 19 is operated to impart slow rotation to the globular housing 28-29 which encloses all of the drive mechanism. When servicing is required, the upper housing segment 28 may be removed upon removal of screws 27. Electric wires leading from a supply source to the lamps and motor are brought in through the tubular support arm 11 and post 13.
Although I have described a preferred embodiment of my invention, in considerable detail, it Will be understood that the description thereof is intended to be illustrative, rather than restrictive, as details of the structure may be modified or changed without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention. Accordingly, I do not desire to be restricted to the exact construction described.
I claim:
1. A display device comprising, in combination, a support arm, a substantially vertical post on said arm, an upright S-shaped frame secured firmly to said post, a combination motor and gear-reduction assembly carried by the upper leg of said frame, said motor being ofiset from the vertical axis of said post, a driven shaft projecting out of said gear reduction assembly, said shaft being in vertical axial alignment with the post, and a globular housing carried by said shaft and enclosing said post, frame, motor and gear-reduction assembly.
2. The display device recited in claim 1, in which the globular housing is comprised of two substantially like halves.
3. The display device recited in claim 1, in which a source of illumination is carried within said globular housing.
4. The display device recited in claim 1, in which the support arm is disposed at an angle to the vertical post.
5. The display device recited in claim 1, in which the globular housing is non-spherical.
