ADVERTISING APPARATUS.

Be it known that I, JOHN HAU SER SCOTT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of IVinston, county of Forsyth, and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

My invention relates to advertising, and the object thereof is to provide a mechanical advertising device which may be placed in a show-window, and formed of any desired size, or which, if preferred, may be built in the window or connected therewith.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, and in which- Figure l is a front elevation of the casing of my improved device, showing one of the figures which constitutes a feature thereof; Fig. 2, a central longitudinal vertical section thereof, and Fig. 3 a plan view.

In the practice of my invention, in the form which I prefer, I provide a boX or casing A, having an upright extension B at the rear thereof, said casin g being adapted to be placed within a show-window, as will be readily understood. In the front of the upright eXtension B are two doors O, having spring-hinges D, and formed in the top of the casin g Ais a slot E, which extends from a point F forward to a point G near the middle of the forward part thereof, and backward to a point H near the opposite side of the upright casing B.

Secured within the casing A, near the middle of the back thereof, is a vertical shaft J, on which is rigidly mounted a beveled gearwheel K, near the center thereof, and also mounted on said shaft, above said gear-wheel and resting thereon, is a bolt or arm L, having a slot L', one end of which extends forward approximately near the front side of the casing A, and the other end of which extends backward adjacent to the upright extension B, and is provided with a screw-threaded aperture Z, adapted to receive a screw-threaded bolt Z', which passes through the back of the said upright extension, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Rigidly mounted on the said shaft J,

above the arm or rod L, is a sprocket-wheel M, which is provided with sprocket-teeth for about one-third of its circumference, said sprocket-wheel and the teeth thereon being clearly shown in Fig. 3.

Mounted in the forward or front end of the rod or arm L is a sprocket-wheel N, and corresponding sprocket-wheels O are mounted in the corners of the frame A, or its upper eX- tension near the back, the arrangement of the sprocket-wheels O and M being such as to form a triangle within the casing, as is also shown in Fig. 3.

Mounted on the sprocket-wheels O and IWI, in such manner as to engage with the sprocketteeth N, is a sprocket-chain P, and secured to said chain, by vertical rods or pins R, are .a plurality of figures S, the rods or pins R being rigidly secured to said chain or the links thereof and in such manner as to extend up through the slot E in the top of the casing A, through which said rods or pins are adapted to be carried b'y said sprocket-chain P. These iigures maybe made to represent any character of person and be clothed or dressed in any desired manner, and each is adapted to carry in its hand a card T, on which may be printed any desired advertisement, and as will be readily understood said cards may be removed or changed at will, it being understood that any desired number of cards may beprovided and that different cards may be substituted by those carried by the figures as often as necessary.

Mounted on a shaft U, which extends through the back of the casing, is a beveled gear-wheel NV, which is adapted to engage with the beveled gear-wheel K, by which the VYdevice is operated, and power may be applied to the shaft U by any desired means or from any preferred source. The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

Then the device is set in motion, the sprocket-chain will be carried around by the wheel M, as will be readily understood, and the figures S will be carried around therewith, moving over the slot E in the top of the casing A in such manner that each gure will in turn pass through one of the doors C forward to the point indicated at X, Figs. 1 and 2, and then pass around through the opposite door, and by reason of the wheel M having sprocket-teeth on but a portion of its circumference each figure will stop at the point X long enough to admit of the advertisement on the card which it carries in its hand being read, after which it will pass on around through one of the doors C and will be followed by the succeeding figure, which will also pause in the manner described, and so on as long as the machine is in operation.

I have shown but two of the figures S, this number being most convenient for the purpose of illustration and description; but it is evident that any desired number of figures may be employed, and the slot L in the rod or arm L and the screw-bolt Z', which has a bearing in the inner end thereof, are for the pupose of tightening the sprocket-chain P and taking up any slack or wear thereof.

Secured to each of the doors C at the bottom thereof is a spring projection C', adapted to contact with a lug or other device p, formed on or secured to the chain I, the purpose of which is to open the doors and hold them open until the figures have pressed through, and any other preferred means may be substituted for this purpose. The number of sprocket-teeth on the wheel M may also be determined and fixed as experience may show best, and this feature of the construction will depend to some extent on the number of the figures employed and the size and the parts and the length of time it is desired for the figures to remain stationary, as hereinbefore described.

Vhen constructed and applied as shown and described, my invention constitutes a simple and effective device for accomplislr ing the object for which it is intended, and it is evident that many changes in the construction shown and described and modiiications thereof may be made without departing from the scope of my invention, and while I have described my said improved advertising device as applied to a show-window it is evident that it maybe otherwise located or placed whereversuch an apparatus could be utilized.

l-Iaving fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In an advertising device,the combination with a casing having an upright extension at the back thereof and spring hinged doors at each side in the front thereof, the top of said casing being also provided with a triangular slot which communicates with each of said doors and extends forward to near the front of the casing, of a shaft rigidly mounted within the casing a sprocket Wheel secured to said shaft having sprocket teeth 011 a portion of its circumference, an arm mounted on said shaft and extending forward to near the front of the casing and having a sprocket wheel mounted in the forward end thereof beneath the most forward point of the slot in the top of the casing, additional sprocket wheels mounted in the rear of the casing, a chain mounted on said sprocket wheels and adapted to be carried around by the main sprocket wheel, said chain being provided at intervals with vertical rods or pins adapted to be carried around through the slot in the casing, and figures supported by said pins adapted to be carried around above said slot, said figures being adapted to carry advertising or other cards, and means for revolving the main sprocket wheel, substantially as shown and described.

In an advertising device,the combination With a casing having an upright extension at the back thereof, and spring hinged doors at each side in the front thereof, the top of said easing being also provided with a triangular slot which communicates with each of said doors and extends forward to near the front of the casing, of a shaft rigidly mounted Within the casin g, a sprocket wheel secured to said shaft having sprocket teeth on a portion of its circumference, an arm mounted on said shaft and extending forward to near the front of the casing and having a sprocket wheel mounted in the forward end thereof beneath the most forward point of the slot in the top of the easing, additional sprocket wheels mounted in the rear of the casing, a chain mounted on said sprocket Wheels and adapted to be carried around by the main sprocket Wheel, said chain being provided at intervals with vertical rods or pins adapted to be carried around through the slot in the easing, and figures supported by said pins adapted to be carried around above said slot, said figures being adapted to carry advertising or other cards, and means for revolving the main sprocket wheel and the rear end of said rod IOO or arm being connected adjustably with the back of the casing, substantially as shown and described.
