UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDOLF J. PETERSON, 0F SALEM, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN CASE & REGISTER COMPANY, OF SALEM, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDOLF J. PETERSON, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Salem, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to advertising devices more specifically adapted for use in connection with credit accounting or filing cabinets wherein there is employed a series of bill holding leaves hinged together or connected together in such a manner that any one leaf of the series may be turned from a substantially vertical position to a horizontal position or vice versa or any number of leaves may be moved in unison from a vertical to a horizontal position or vice versa.
The objects of the invention are, to provide an advertising device that can be 0perated so as to expose advertisements and to bring to view different advertisements or difierent members going to make up the combination.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the action of the advertising device is not materially interfered with, if in the event the credit slip holding leaves or other movable leaves are loaded relatively with reference to each other by reason of increased or decreased numbers of credit slips being placed and carried upon the credit slip holding leaves.
The invention further consists in the novel parts and combination and arrangement of parts whereby the above pointed out objects, together with other objects readily apparent to those skilled in the art are brought about.
In the accompanying drawing,Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view, showing the credit slip or hinged leaves in a vertical position and illustrating the mechanism intermediate the front or forward leaf and the advertising device proper. Fig. 2 is a view showing the upper portion of the case or cabinet and illustrating four shafts together with the mechanism adapted to actuate said shafts, one of the shafts being Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 26, 1911.

shown with the advertising strips properly connected. Fig. 3 is a view showing a portion of the housing illustrating the relative position of the advertising actuating shafts, together with their different parts properly coupled together. Fig. 4 is a vertical section showing a portion of the housing and illustrating a portion of one of the advertis ing shafts properly connected to be actuated, also showing a portion of the advertising drum. Fig. 5 is a transverse section on line li, Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is an inner face view of the shaft holding plate illustrating the position of the friction arm.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
The cabinet is of the usual construction reference being had to assembling the different parts. The cabinet within itself forms no specific part of the present invention, except that a cabinet of some construction is necessarily present in order that the objects of the present invention may be carried out.
The cabinet is made up of suitable side members 1, the bottom 2, the back 3 and the partition t, together with the leaf supporting shelf 5 and such other parts necessary to produce a cabinet such as commonly used or employed in credit registers of the class to which this advertising device pertains. The partition 4 is spaced from the back 3 a suflicient distance to provide a suitable chamber or space for the various parts going to make up the advertising devices, together with the mechanism used to actuate the ad vertising devices. The advertising devices or more specifically the parts to be actuated are designed to be intermittently moved or actuated by the downward movement of the forward credit slip holding leaf 6 or its equivalent, or in other words the advertising devices are to be actuated when the front leaf or its equivalent is brought from substantially a vertical position to substantially a horizontal or lowered position. To one of the side members 1 of the cabinet or its equivalent is pivotally attached the curved lever 7 by means of the rivet or pin 8, said lever being pivoted in such a manner or at such a point so that when the upper portion of the lever 7 is moved downward with the downward movement of the front or forward credit slip holding leaf 6, the rear end of said lever will be moved upward. To the rear end of the lever 7 is pivotally attached the bar 9 and to the top or upper end of said bar 9 is slidably connected the bar 9-, the bar 9 being formed of such a length that operative connections may be made to the various short or stub shafts 10, which shafts are journaled in the spaced plat- es 11 and 12, said spaced plates being held in proper spaced relationship by the end bars or blocks 13. These spaced bars 11 and 12 are held in proper fixed relationship to one of the side members 1 of the cabinet.
Upon the short or stub shafts 10 are fixedly mounted the ratchet wheels 14 and upon the short stub shafts 10 are loosely mounted the rock arms 15, which rock arms are pivotally connected to the bar 9. It will be understood that when the lever 7 is actuated by the downward movement of the front or forward leaf or credit slip holding leaf 6 the bars 9 and 9 will be moved upward by the upward movement of the rear end of the lever 7. As the bars 9 and 9 are moved upward the connected ends of the rock bars 15 connected to the bar 9 will be moved upward, said rock arms turning upon the stub shafts 9. To the rock arms 15 are pivotally attached the detents 16, which detents are so arranged that their free ends will engage the teeth of the ratchet wheels 14. As the rock arms 15 are moved upward the detents 16 will be moved upward, which upward movement imparts rotary motion to the various ratchet wheels, which in turn imparts rotary motion to the short or stub shafts 10 by reason of the fact that the ratchet wheels 14 are fixedly mounted upon said shafts. It will be understood that this rotary motion is intermittent owing to the fact that the rock arms 15 actuate the shafts 10 during the upward movement only.
It will be understood that as between the lever 7 and the rods 9 and a provision should be made for slack movement so that the movements of the rock arms will be substantially the same as the limits of their upward movement regardless of the exact position of the front leaf and in order to provide for this slack movement the top or upper end of the bar 9 is provided with the elongated slot 17, through which elongated slot the connecting belt or pin 18 is passed, which connecting bolt or pin is for the purpose of coupling the bars 9 and 9 together. It will be understood that by providing the elongated slot 17 the bar 9 can be moved upward, a short distance before any upward movement of the bar 9 -takes place, owing to the fact that the bar 9" will remain stationary or at rest until the bolt or pin 18 strikes the bottom of the slot 17 or its equivalent, after which the bars 9 and 9 will be moved upward in unison.
For the purpose of ad'usting the sliding movement as between the bars 9 and 9 the bar 9 is provided with the slotted plate 20 through which slotted plate are passed the screws 21 and 22 which screws are for the purpose of holding the plate 20 in proper relative position with reference to the bar 9. \Vhen it is desired to shorten the length of the slots 17 and thereby shorten the sliding movement as between the bars 9 and 9 the slotted plate 20 is released and moved upward the desired distance and when moved upward to cover a portion of the slot 17 the sliding movement will be shortened, owing to the fact that the bolt or pin 18 will strike the top of the slotted plate 20. When the front or forward leaf 6 is brought from a horizontal position to a vertical position the lever 7 will rock upon its pivotal point, the upper portion of said lever following the movement of the front leaf and the lower end of said lever will move downward which in turn moves the bars 9 and 9 downward and at the same time lowering the rock arms 15 or more specifically rocking said arms downward at which time the detents 16 ride idly upon the teeth of the ratchet wheels 14.
For the purpose of insuring the downward movement of the inner lower end of the lever 6 the spring 23 is provided, one end of said spring being secured to the lever 7 and the opposite or other end fixed to the cabinet in any convenient and well known manner.
For the purpose of insuring the downward movement of the bar 9 together with the parts actuated by said bar the spring 21 is provided one end of said spring being attached to the bar 9 or its equivalent and its opposite end being attached to the cabinet or its equivalent. The short or stub shafts 10 are extended into the cabinet or beyond the plate 12 a short distance and upon which extended portions are located the sleeves 25, which sleeves may be secured to the shafts 1.0 or they may be loosely mounted upon said shafts, but in either event said sleeves should be so attached that they will not be liable to slip off from the shafts 10. The shafts 10 are provided at their inner ends with semi-circular or angular portions 26, which semi-circular portions provide means for rotatably coupling the shafts 27 and the stub shafts 10 together, said shafts 27 being provided with angular or semi-circular ends, the flat faces of which fit the fiat faces of the stub shafts 10 and when the ends of the shafts 27 are inserted in the sleeves 25 the stub shafts 10 and the shafts 27 will be rotatably connected together so that when in termittent rotary movement is imparted to the stub shafts 10, intermittent rotary movement will be imparted to the shafts 27 together with the advertising slats 28 fixed to the disks 29, said disks 29 being securely mounted upon the shafts 27.
The disks 29 are provided with extended lugs 30, which are shaped to hold in proper relative position the proper advertising slats 28, said slats being held in such a manner that they can be easily removed for the purpose of changing the advertisement or for any other purpose desired. Upon the op posite side member of the case from that to which the mechanism connected with the short stub shafts 10 is located and attached the plate 31 to which plate is attached or formed integral therewith the bearings 32, which bearings are formed hollow or provided with chambers in which chambers are located the springs 33, which springs abut against the face of the plate 31 or the side member 1 of the cabinet, and the opposite ends of said springs abut against the disks 34, which disks rest against the ends of the shafts 27. It will be understood that the shafts 27 can be moved endwise a short distance which endwise movement disconnects the shafts 27 from the stub shafts 10 at which time the shafts 27 together with the different parts carried thereby can be re moved from the cabinet.
For the purpose of preventing any backward movement of the shafts 27 during the downward movement of the bars 9 and 9 the friction bars 35 are provided, which friction bars are provided with the friction blocks 36, said blocks normally pressing against the faces of the disks 29; that is to say the set of disks located near the plate 31.
It will be understood that the friction bars 35 should be formed of spring material so that when the shafts 27 are moved endwise they will give sufliciently to permit said end movement. It will also be understood that when the shafts 27 are moved endwise the springs 33 will be compressed. The
friction blocks 36 are preferably formed of felt or like material for the purpose of increasing the friction and at the same time allowing the said friction blocks to be slightly compressed when the shafts 27 are moved endwise.
For the purpose of limiting the downward movement of the rock bars 15, the plate 11 is provided with the stop pin 37, said stop pin being so located that it will hold the rock bars 15 at the proper angle to be actuated by the bar 9*. For the purpose of preventing the detents 16 from moving too far away from the ratchet wheels 1% or falling out of position the pins 38 are provided, which pins are carried by the rock bar 15. In order to prevent any backward movement of the stub shafts 10 during the downward movement of the bars 9 and9 the detents 39 are provided which detents are so arranged that they will engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel and prevent any backward movement of said ratchet wheels. These detents are employed in addition to the friction bars 35 and the friction blocks 36, said friction bars and blocks being more specifically designed to prevent any accidental movement of the shafts 27. For the purpose of holding the detents 39 in proper relationship with reference to the ratchet wheels 14, the pins 40 are provided which pins are connected to the plate 12 or its equivalent.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a display apparatus, the combination of a cabinet, a series of leaves hinged together and normally located in the cabinet, said leaves adapted for independent movement, a pivoted lever actuated by one of the leaves, bars adapted to be actuated by the lever, said bars slidably connected together intermediate their ends, and means for adjusting the relatively sliding movement as between said bars, an advertising device and means intermediate the relatively sliding bars and the advertising device adapted to actuate said advertising device, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
