ADVERTISING APPARATUS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LESLIE U. CORNELIUS,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Rocky Hill Station, in thecounty of Edmonson apd State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Advertising Apparatus, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to advertising boards. g I .The object'of the invention is to rovide an article of this-character that shall e simple of construction, efficient and durable in use, cheap to manufacture, and in which the advertising matter may readily be positioned and removed, as required, be positively held in place against danger of accidental dis placing, as from wind or rain, and in'which such matter shall be displa ed in the most advantageous manner. urthermore, to adapt the article as a means for informing travelers of the distance in mi es from a given board to a town, the business interests of which are displayed by the board.

With the a ove and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of an advertising board, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

' The article comprises a back or support 1, and a gridded frame designated generally 2. While there has been shown but four spaces for receiving advertising matter, it is to be understood that the invention is not to belimitedto this number, as. many as may be desired may be provided, and still be Within the scope of the invention:

mit'of their being Changed, as the purpose of the invention is to make the device a paying one, that is by charging the advertisers so much; for a month or a half month for the privilege. It is intended that the board shall be set at a distance of from fifteen to thirty -five feet from the road and that the signs shall be painted, printed from lithographed plates or from wood type in large, clear, bold lettersgso that they may be easily read by one passing.

The feature of constituting the device a distance indicator will be appreciated by persons traveling over roads employing this particular form of advertising board.

It will be observed from an inspection of the drawings that the strips 17, 18, and 19 are each of a greater width than the keeper which it covers when the frame is in position 1 against the back or support of the sign boardand the keepers are in this manner not only concealed from view but protected and a sign having a neat appearance is produced.

I claim 1. An advertising board comprising a back, keepers secured to the face of the back and spaced therefrom to receive surfaces 7 bearing advertising matter, and a frame hinged to the vback and comprising strips which, when the frame is in position against the back coincide with the keepers and cover the same.

2. An advertising board comprising a back or support, keepers secured to the face thereof and spaced therefrom to provide guides to receive -panels bearing advertising matter, a frame arranged in front of the back and divided into openings approximating the size of the advertising panels, abatten carried by the upper edge of the frame and projecting over, the upper edge of the back, hinges connecting the rear edge of the batten and the rear face of the back, end battens carried by the frame and inclosing the ends of the back to prevent lateral displacement of the advertising panels, the lower ends of the latter battens. being projected beyond the lower edge of the frame, a batten. secured to the lower edge of the back and arranged between the extended portions of the frame battens to prevent end shake of the frame, and means for holding the frame and back detachably connected.
