To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRED It. EMERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices; and I do declare the following to be aclear, full, and eXact descrlptlon of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertalns to make and use the same, reference bemg had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.

This invention relates to improvements in a device for advertising purposes and is adapted to be mounted upon the body of an automobile or other power propelled vehicle and to receive its power from the same source as that used to propel the sa1d vehicle. From the description hereinafter set forth it will be apparent that a vast amount of fabric can be inclosed withln the frame work of the device thereby giving a very great amount of surface for the d18- play of advertisements.

A further object of the inventlon is to produce a simple and inexpenslve devlce and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it 1s designed.

These objects I accompllsh by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.

In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 3 is a View showing the device mounted upon an automobile. Fig. d is a cross sectional View showing the actuating roller. Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view of a guide roller. Fig. 6 is a View of the take-up box.

Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the rear top transverse member of the supporting frame, the numeral 2 the front transverse member and the numeral 3 a transverse bracing member adjacent a longitudinal brace 4:. The same members are duplicated at the bottom of the frame and connected by suitable braces 5 to the top members thereof.

Mounted in ball bearings 6, fastened to the framework by bolts 7 are rollers 8 upon which is disposed a wide endless canms, or other pliable fabric, belt 9 which is guided diagonally back and forth by the rollers 8 within the frame. To bring the belt 9, which will be painted or printed with advertising matter to view, I have placed rollers at each corner and brought the belt out around them so that it will be visible on two sides and one end as is clearly shown by the drawing. To take up the slack of the belt I have provided upon both ends of the roller 8 ball bearings 10 which are adapted to slide in. a slot 11 cut in the frame member 4 and adapted to be held in any desired position by the bolt 12 which is slidable in a slot 13 also cut into the frame member 4c.

To drive the belt 9 I have provided upon the roller 14 a sprocket 15 upon which is disposed a belt made of two parts 16 and 16 between which is fastened the fabric belt 9 by means of rivets 19. This belt with the fabric carried between and fastened thereto is perforated through its entire length by openings as at 17 for the engagement of the sprocket teeth 15. To hold this belt 1616 in place I have provided upon all the rollers a shoulder 18 cut into the roller the depth of the thickness of the inside belt 16. The belt is thus held in position and cannot slip downward upon the said rollers.

To overcome any tendency of the belt 9 to project farther down the rollers than is desired I have provided another shoulder as at 18*:

To drive the actuating roller 14 I have extended this said roller downwardly below the frame and fastened thereto a friction wheel 20 which is adjacent another driving friction wheel 21 mounted upon the driving shaft 22 of the vehicle.

To throw the friction out of gear I have provided upon the roller 14 a bearing 23 which is slidable in a slot 24 cut into one of the lower frame members; to this bearing 23 is fastened by means of a screw hook 25 a spiral spring 26 fastened to the vehicle frame 27 by means of a screw hook 28. This spring keeps the friction wheels tightly engaged and to separate them I have provided the lever 29 slidable in a box 29 and the said lever running adjacent the roller 14 will push the said friction wheels apart when the lever is pushed ahead by V the operator. Upon the roller 14: is fastened a collar 31 to hold the roller from sliding out of place. To allow of the movement of the roller 14-, just described, it is so positioned in its upper bearing 6 as to yield with a slight pivotal movement when the lever 29 pushes its lower end. (See Fig. 4.)

From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfills the object of the invention as set forth herein.

While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described my invention what 'I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A device of the character described comprising the combination of a frame, a plurality of rollers carried by said frame, each roller having an upper and lower shoulder, the diameter of the lower shoulder being greater than that of the upper shoulder, an endless web movable over all of said rollers above the lower shoulders, a sprocket gear carried on one of said rollers, an endless perforated belt on the upper edge of said endless web, such belt engaging said sprocket gear and normally resting on the upper shoulders of said rollers, and means for imparting rotary motion to the roller carrying said sprocket gear, as described.

2. A device of the character described comprising the combination of a frame, a plurality of rollers carried by said frame, one of said rollers being journaled at one end to yield with a slight pivotal movement, a bearing slidably mounted adjacent said frame, said last named roller projecting through said bearing, a driven member means on one end of said last named roller engageable with said driven member to impart motion to said roller, and an endless Web mounted over all of said rollers and adapted to be driven by said last named roller as described.
