HAND-PROPELLED VEHICLE.
Application filed October 15, 1915.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS MCCORMICK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand- Propelled Vehicles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, whereby any one skilled in the art may make and use the same.
This invention relates broadly to vehicles, but more particularly it concerns those of the hand propelled type.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a structure which will be simple and easy in operation, as the device is intended primarily for the use and amusement of children. Another object is to simplify the construction in that I have provided a minimum number of moving parts, thus reducing friction and consequent wear.
Other objects will be in part obvious, and in part pointed out hereafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the device hereinafter described and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated one of the various possible embodiments of my invention, Figure 1 is a top plan view, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section, partly in elevation.

This invention in general seeks to provide a device of the class described which from a practical standpoint will in usage possess a high degree of efficiency, and which structurally considered will embody the essence of simplicity, being composed of but few parts, each adapted for being constructed at a minimum of cost, and individually of such a nature as to be capable of being readily assembled by any person skilled in the art.

front wheels are rigidly affixed, one at either end of a shaft 3 having in the center a crank with arms 4. Suspended from the shaft 3 by means of side plates 56 is a base board 7.
The rear wheels 22 are arranged to revolve upon a shaft 8 and suspended from this shaft by means of bearings 9-10 is a floor plate 11 carrying by means of the brackets 1212 the seat 13. A bolt 14 passes through the floor board 11, spacing washers 15, and base board 7, on the under side of which the bolt is secured by means of the nut 16. The bolt 14: therefore acts as a king bolt, or pivot between the floor board, 11, and the base board 7 allowing a turning movement between them in a horizontal plane.
On either side of the bolt 14 and near the forward edge of the base board 7 are placed foot rests 17 and 18. A handle or wristpin 19 is rotatably secured between the crank arms H.
The operation of the device is as follows: The operator seats himself upon the seat 13 and places one foot on each of the rests 17 and 18. He then grasps the wrist-pin 19 in either hand and by turning the crank arms l motion is communicated directly to the front wheels. The device can be driven in either a forward or backward direction by simply turning the crank in the proper direction. At the same time by exerting a pressure with either foot upon one of the foot rests, the floor board 11 and appurtenant parts are caused to assume an angular position with respect to the base board 7 thus steering the device. It is obvious that as only one hand is necessary to operate the crank, the other hand may be employed to assist in steering when desired by grasping one of the side plates 56 and exerting pressure in the proper direction. A handle or pull cord might also be attached to the base board 7 if desired so that the device could be towed when necessary.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a device of the class described, in combination, a frame or body having a shaft arranged to be rotated in bearings secured to the forward part of said frame, said shaft being provided with steering and driving wheels fixedly secured upon either end and ing movement to the steering and driving having a cralk arm intermediate said Wheels, substantially as described.
