Description
L. YOAKUM. TOY VEHICLE.
APPLICATION FILED JAN.20, 1912.
s 1 Q I Patented May 14, 1912.
JOHN L. YOAK'UM, 0 13 FOWLER, INDIANA.
TOY VEHICLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14:, 1912.
Application filed January 20, 1912. Serial No. 672,313.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN L. YoAKUu, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fowler, in the county of Benton and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toy Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates totoy vehicles, and has for its object to provide means for imparting oscillatory or wave-like movements to the body thereof as the vehicle is propelled whereby considerable amusement will be furnished the occupants.
Another object of the invention is to provide a vehicle in which the main body supporting member will be positioned in the body and at a point adjacent to the occupants seat-s so that the occupants may grasp the member to be held thereby against accidental falling from the vehicle as the body rocks.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough, Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 2.
The vehicle comprises a wheel base or frame which includes the side members 1, the pivoted front axle 2 and the revolubly mounted rear axle 3. The front axle is provided with loosely mounted supporting wheels and the rear axle is fixedly mounted to relatively large driving wheels 5. The body 6 of the vehicle may be of any suitable construction and design or configuration, being preferably provided at its opposite ends with seats 7 for the occupants.
' With a view of permitting the body 6 to be freely oscillated on the supporting frame of the vehicle I provide the longitudinal bars 1 with standards 8 whose upper ends are provided with bearings 9. The main supporting member for the body'6 comprises a rod 10 which extends through the bushings 11 in the side walls of the body 6, the ends of said rod being mounted in the bearings 9. The ends of the rod 10 are provided with removable cotter pins or like fastening devices 12 that can be readily disengaged from the rod so as to permit the latter to be disconnected from the vehicle body 6 if desired for the purpose of furnishing the body with suit-able repairs. The rod 10 is disposed above the plane of the bottom of the body 6 and it is interposed between the seats 7. The rod is embraced by a suitable hand grip 13 which may be grasped by the hands of the occupants whereby the occupants will be guarded to an extent against accidental falling from the vehicle as the motor is propelled.
The rear driving axle 8 which is secured to the large wheels 5 is provided intermediate of its ends with a crank portion 14 which is connected in any suitable well known manner wit-h the body 6, preferably through the medium of the pitman rod 15 so that the motion transmitted to the axle 3 as the vehicle is propelled will be transmitted to the vehicle body. In this manner it is seen that as the vehicle is propelled oscillatory or substantially wave-like movements will be imparted to the wagon body so as to furnish suitable amusement for the occupants thereof. If desired, the front axle 2 may be connected with a tongue or draft-pole such as the one shown at 16 in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The bushings are provided with squared passages 17, and as shown, the member 10 is provided with correspondingly squared portions 18 which are fitted in said passages. In this manner the member 10 is fixed to the body 6 so that the latter rocks with the former. This construction is desirable so that the hand gripping portions of the members will be always in the same positions relative to the occupants seats 7 The said member 10 is preferably provided wit-h oppositely extending branches 18', one of which being disposed in convenient reach 'of the occupant of each seat.
I claim:
1. A toy vehicle comprising a wheeled frame, a rocking body thereon, means for rocking the body when the frame is propelled, and a combined hand grip and body support for connecting the body with the frame.
2. A toy vehicle comprising a frame having a wheeled driving axle, standards supthe rocking body so that as the axle is reported by the frame, a member mounted for volved the body will be rocked. 10 rocking movements in the standards, a rock- In testimony whereof I afiix my signature ing body fixedly connected with said memin presence of two witnesses.
