FLOOR-MAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of l ettersPatentNo. 276,983, dated May 1, 11883. Application filed March 7, 1883. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON TOFFLER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Floor-Mats, of which the followingis a specification. a a
This invention has reference to an improved construction of floor-mats, for cars, halls, and other purposes, of that class which may be readily rolled up or folded together when it is desired to clean the floor; and'the invention consists of a number of transverse slats which j, are connected at two or more points by-straps or bands applied to the slats, andby intermediatelinks passing through sleeves of the straps or hands, said links holding the slats at proper distancefrom each other.
resents a plan of my improved floor-mat.
j material, and of round, square, or other cross:
In the accom panyingdrawin gs, Figure 1 rep- Fig. 2 is an enlarged portion of the same drawn partly in section. Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical transverse sections, respectively, on lines m w and y y, Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a detailverlical transverse section on line z 2, Fig. 2.
sponding parts.
A A in the drawingsrepresent a number of slats or rods of wood, metal, or othersuitable section. The slatsAlA are connected at two or more points by means of flat straps a a, of
sh'eetmetal, which are passed through trans verse slits or mortises b b of the slats A, and provided atbothends with sleeves a at, equal n width withthe body of the link. Theflat body of the straps unis held tightlyin the slits ormortises b of'the slats A by means of Similar letters of reference indicate correferrules d, placed over the ends of the slats, as shown in Fig. 2. When a more ornamental floor-mat is desired, the straps a a, instead of 40 being made flat and passed through transverseslitsor mortises of the slats, are made in the shaped bands encircling the slats, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The encirelingbands an are, like the straps a a, provided with 5 sleeves a a at both ends. The adjoining sleevesc a of the straps or hands a a. are again connected by wire links (2 e, which are located parallel to andintermediately between the slats, by which not only the proper diso tance between the slats, but also a more flexible connection ofthe same is secured, so that the floor-mat 'caube rolled up or folded into narrow compass whenever required.
I am aware that slat mattings with flexible connections, which permit the rolling up of the same, have been used heretofore, and Ido not broadly claim the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. as new and desire to secure by Letters Paten t-- As an improvement in floormats, the com bination of transverse slats A A, connected at two or more points by transverse straps or bands a at, having sleeves a a at both ends,
with intermediatelinlis, e 6, passed th'roughadjoining sleeves ofthe straps or bands at a,sub-
stan'tially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim theforegoingas my invention I have signed my name in presence of twosnbscribing witnesses.
SIMON TOFFLER.
